The scariest part of building a business? The debt at the beginning.
When I first started my business, one of the hardest things I faced was being in a lot of debt.
There was always that fear in the background.
What if this doesn’t work?
And the truth is, when you’re growing a business, money can still feel tight at times. Because when you’re scaling, you’re constantly reinvesting back into the business.
But what really changed things for me wasn’t just strategy.
It was working on myself.
I invested in mentors and coaches.
I listened to podcasts every single day about mindset.
I built daily habits that helped me manage pressure.
Things like mindfulness, meditation, and EFT tapping, which helps calm your nervous system when the stress kicks in.
Because someone once said something to me that stuck:
Your problems don’t disappear as your business grows, they just get bigger.
So, the real work is learning how to handle the pressure that comes with growth.
And that starts with developing yourself.

A day in my life… but not the busy, back to back, KPI version.
We went away for Valentine’s to Eastwell Manor.
Beautiful room.
Spa in our dressing gowns.
A game of chess that I absolutely lost, hence the martini.
But here’s what I’ve really learned after 30 years in business.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is step away.
When I had five salons, funding contracts, apprenticeships, staff, cash flow pressures, I used to believe I had to be “on” all the time.
On for the team.
On for the learners.
On for the business.
And what I didn’t realise then is that clarity doesn’t come when you’re constantly in it.
It comes when you step out of it.
Walking.
Reading.
Sitting quietly in a spa chair doing absolutely nothing.
That’s when the strategy lands.
That’s when the decisions feel aligned.
That’s when you remember why you built it in the first place.
I don’t build businesses just to be busy.
I build them for freedom.
For choice.
For time.
Time with my husband.
Time to think.
Time to reflect on the next stage.
At 60, I’m not chasing noise.
I’m building with intention.
And sometimes intention looks like a dressing gown, a spa day, and coming home calmer than when you left.
That’s not weakness.
That’s leadership.

Exactly one month ago our world changed with Andy’s diagnosis.
Today, we fly to Tenerife with our children and grandchildren for a week together, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated time more than I do right now.
This past month has reminded me how easy it is to get caught up in work, stress, responsibilities, and “busy”, while forgetting the things that truly matter most.
The hugs.
The laughter.
The FaceTime calls.
The little moments we often rush past.
Life can change so quickly.
And sometimes it takes something painful to remind us to stop and really live.
I wrote a very personal Substack about this today, about family, time, memories, and why we should never get so busy building a life that we forget to enjoy it.
