Music editor and playback engineer Tyler McDiarmid explains how music playback is handled live on Saturday Night Live. Using a small set of faders, MIDI controllers, and multiple playback systems, music cues are triggered and mixed in real time. Adjusted to dialogue, vocals, and sketch timing, often cue by cue, with no traditional mix and no margin for error.
Had the pleasure of mixing this incredible performance of the Gil/Miles arrangement of Concierto de Aranjuez by @gilevansproject . 22 amazing musicians recording themselves at home. Hats off to Ryan Truesdell for putting this all together! Link to full video in bio.
