Veerle Swenters & Pierre Bogaerts write -
“20 years ago we ended up in the shoe industry as Veerle’s father was a shoemaker in Antwerp.
2 years later we started the SONS project. In a first phase, we collected data from artists, which was a challenge in itself.
We wrote letters, and spent hours on the phone,... it was a huge task. We sent more than a thousand letters to the most famous artists in the world: Arman, Baselitz, Fabre, Long, Panamarenko, Pistoletto, Richter, Wesselman, etc.
We soon received positive reactions, which motivated us to continue the project. Spontaneously, the artists transformed their shoes into art objects.
Hence the title: “Shoes Or No Shoes? ”
It is always nice to ask the visitor this question.
Many people would like to know what our beloved object is or which artist we prefer. We don’t actually have a favorite artist, as we view the collection as a whole and not as individual contributions. Therefore, it is difficult to say which object is our number one.
