Dr. Paul Posnak, Professor Emeritus of Keyboard Performance and former Director of the Collaborative Piano Program at the University of Miami, visited on April 14 to conduct a masterclass with Mrs. Holland’s high school piano students. Dr. Posnak provided insightful instruction on hand and wrist alignment to encourage greater flexibility and efficiency at the keyboard. He further guided students in shaping musical phrases with nuanced dynamic contrast and expressive clarity. Additionally, he demonstrated selected passages from the students’ repertoire, offering exemplary models to strengthen both technical command and interpretive depth. The Smith Family Conservatory of the Arts piano students were thrilled to welcome Dr. Marie Jureit-Beamish, Professor Emerita of Music from Principia College and formerly the Charles Stewart-Harding Mott Distinguished Professor of Music. The students played pieces they are preparing for their upcoming recitals. The students played works by Daquin, Lynes, Beethoven, Mozart, and Mendelssohn. Dr. Jureit-Beamish showed students how to sit properly at the piano, creating a distance that is appropriate and not too close. She also showed students a creative way to get their hands into correct piano playing hand positions by having students stand up straight with good posture, hands at their sides, and then having students bring their hands up to the keyboard in a resting position. Dr. Jureit-Beamish worked with several students concerning the importance of piano tone. Regarding tone, she encouraged students to play out more with an emphasis on the placement of their 5th finger in creating a musical line at the right musical moment. Thank you to Dr. Jureit-Beamish and Mrs. Holland for continuing to bring excellence to The Smith Family Conservatory of the Arts.
