Today we had lunch at HAVE Café on East Pender.
This is an incredible organization that trains people who have experienced homelessness to earn their Red Seal certification, helping them find work and stay off the streets. It’s a mission that is very close to my heart, as it reflects exactly why I created TIPS Academy.
My goal has always been to create opportunities for people who may not have considered hospitality, by helping them understand what this industry is truly about—how to love it, respect it, and build a strong foundation to succeed.
I would highly encourage anyone to stop by the café or go there for lunch. Their kitchen produces around 800 meals a day, supporting various locations and charities across the Downtown Eastside, as well as catering for local businesses.
I look forward to supporting them by offering front-of-house training, so participants can develop both kitchen and service skills.
Thank you @iantostenson from @bcrfa for being such a gracious host during this event. Thank you @amberhavecafe for the amazing hospitality and inspiration
Exam day for the March’s class today! Thank you @provencemarinaside for letting us use their space once again. The next 16h Introduction to serving course starts on April 11th @savio_volpe . I hope to see you there. Register at https://tipsacademybc.ca
Mention Tips Academy Certification an asset in your FOH job post this spring and summer. See who is invested and is willing to invest into themselves to be the best employee. Its a win-win. Ask me for the list of all the restaurants who already joined this industry shift! Let’s come together to elevate hospitality in BC.
This morning was an exciting one.
I had the opportunity to speak about tipping policy across British Columbia with four different radio shows:
6:37 AM – Victoria – On the Island with Gregor Craigie
6:50 AM – Vancouver – The Early Edition with Stephen Quinn
7:00 AM – Kamloops – Daybreak Kamloops with Shelley Joyce
7:20 AM – Kelowna – Daybreak South with Chris Walker
The conversation around tipping is clearly evolving. Many people feel it has gone too far and are questioning whether it should be abolished altogether.
I don’t believe tipping should disappear.
I believe it should go back to what it was meant to be — something that is earned, not expected.
If you ask for a tip, you must be willing to go above and beyond to deserve it. That means being truly customer-focused, paying attention to detail, and delivering an experience — not just service.
This is exactly why I created TIPS Academy.
At the same time, guests should feel confident in their choice. If the experience does not meet expectations, they should feel comfortable selecting “other” and leaving the tip they believe reflects the service received.
Accountability on both sides raises the standard for everyone.
And when standards rise, the entire industry benefits. Your thoughts? Are you comfortable adjusting the tips to less than the requested prompt?
