New to our website, check out Storehouse Lofts — an #adaptivereuse of a WWII-era military warehouse transformed into a residential building with 198 live-work lofts and two restaurants. Link in bio. Naval Air Station Alameda Historic District Building 8, also known as the General Storehouse, was used for heavy material storage until the air station closed in the late 1990s. Twenty-five years later, the mixed-use facility now contributes to the #revitalization of Alameda Point by housing hundreds of new tenants and demonstrating the potential of other underused and historically significant buildings in the area. This 302,500-square-foot project shows how a creative, analysis-driven structural engineering approach can unlock the latent capacity of a historic building to deliver much-needed #housing in the Bay Area. Big thanks to Mateo Arias Luna as he wraps up his #internship at Tipping today! As the recipient of the 2025 Steven B. Tipping Memorial Scholarship for Innovation and Excellence in Structural Engineering, Mateo brought curiosity, talent, and dedication to the team and projects. “My experience at Tipping has allowed me to transfer academia into real world practice. Through working on projects, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of engineering judgment, structural detailing, and the importance of clear communication within a design team. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most during my internship has been seeing how engineering decisions at Tipping balance between structural efficiency, innovation, environmental impacts and coordination. Working under the mentorship of welcoming engineers made this internship both memorable and exciting, strengthening my passion for structural engineering. I want to give a huge thank you to Marc Steyer for this amazing opportunity, as well as all the Tipping engineers for sharing their knowledge throughout my internship,” says Mateo. This month, Mateo is graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from #UCBerkeley where he is also returning this fall to pursue a Master of Science in Structural Engineering, Mechanics, and Materials. We’re grateful for his contributions and excited to see what’s ahead! The #scholarship is made possible through a partnership with NCSEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship Program, the Tipping family, and Tipping. #tippinstructural #internship @berkeley_engineering

A concrete-framed, mixed-use residential #highrise building, SKAIA infuses hundreds of residents, as well as new retail and restaurants, to the downtown Oakland neighborhood. Through close collaboration with the project team including @perkinswillsf , @gerdingedlen and @suffolkbuild , Tipping was able to devise a symmetrical, efficient, and well integrated structural system comprising two-way post-tensioned concrete slabs supported by concrete columns and braced with a slender concrete core. Rising 23 stories above grade, the #apartmentbuilding has 206 rental units, three stories of parking, and ground floor commercial space including retail and amenity spaces for residents. A podium at the 4th level offers more communal spaces and a landscaped terrace. The rooftop, at the 23rd level, houses mechanical systems to the north and a communal pool to the south. Now underway, the Bancroft–Fulton Student Housing #highrise is set to become the tallest university-owned residential building on UC Berkeley’s campus — delivering 1,625 new beds and a 500-seat dining hall. Wrapped in glass-fiber-reinforced concrete panels and floor-to-ceiling glazing, the 23-story tower sits atop a granite-clad podium grounded within its urban context. Targeting #LEEDPlatinum, the 430,000 SF building incorporates many sustainable measures including the integration of low-cement concrete in the building’s structure. Earlier this April, Tipping Principal Mike Korolyk, SE, was invited by Khalid Mosalam, Professor at UC Berkeley, to deliver a guest lecture at CE221 on the topic of ‘Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis in Practice.’ “It was my honor and delight to present to the class of engineering students in CE 221 at UC Berkeley; it brought back memories of a time when I was in their place, and absorbing the curriculum felt like drinking from a fire hose! I appreciated their interest and participation and look forward to future opportunities to share what I’ve learned in practice,” remarks Mike. @berkeley_cee #tippingstructural #ucberkeley

Tipping is looking for a sharp, highly organized Executive Assistant & Office Coordinator to join our team, full time and on site. This is a role for someone who genuinely thrives on complexity — who gets satisfaction from keeping multiple people and work streams organized, and who takes pride in the quality of everything that leaves their hands. The work ranges widely, from supporting the CEO with client correspondence and fee proposals, to managing the day-to-day life of the office — vendors, facilities, supplies, onboarding, events. You’ll be a central, trusted presence in the firm, and the kind of person everyone is glad to have around. HAPPY EARTH DAY 🌎 As part of our effort to create a more sustainable future, five years ago Tipping joined the #SE2050 Program, formally committing to substantial reductions of embodied carbon in the structural systems we design. As part of this movement, we aspire to amplify our advocacy efforts including data and knowledge sharing to reduce the short- and long-term impacts of building construction on the environment. This Thursday, April 23rd, Tipping Principal Leo Panian, SE, is presenting at the @aisc ’s NASCC: The Steel Conference in Atlanta at the Georgia World Congress Center! Leo will be speaking about “Practical Steel Design for Seismic Resilience” alongside Larry Fahnestock, PhD, PE, and Paul Richards, PhD. Beginning at 1:45pm, the hour-long session will present overarching concepts about seismic resilience and describe strategies that can be used within established steel systems to limit damage and improve performance. Seismic design case studies and example projects will be highlighted. Attendees will gain a working understanding of seismic resilience concepts and will learn about practical applications for the seismic design of steel structures. / #nascc #thesteelconference #aisc #steeldesign #atlanta

This spring, Tipping Principal Leo Panian was on a panel about “The Cost Crisis: Rethinking What and How We Design and Build.” As part of the Design Colloquium hosted by Cameron MacAllister Group in San Francisco, the panel discussed what design excellence looks like in an era where construction costs, labor shortages, and supply chain volatility make building harder than ever. Facilitated by Mark Cameron, Founder and Principal at CMG, other panelists included Ray Calabro, Principal at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Marc Fisher, Vice Chancellor for Administration at the University of California, Berkeley, and Mazie Huh, Design Integration Manager at Webcor. #desigbuild #paneldiscussion #designcolloquium #tippingstructural

Located in #SanFrancisco on the southeast corner of Folsom and Essex Streets, the Rene Cazenave Apartments is an #affordablehousing project that achieves environmental, financial, and social sustainability goals. Co-developed by BRIDGE Housing and HomeRise, the 74,700-square-foot building provides the community with 108 studios, 12 one-bedroom units, and 3,395-square-feet of retail space. Creating a new community, selected highlights include: - Seismic Resilience: Performance-based design concepts were used to create a post-tensioned concrete lateral system that limits the interstory drift to one percent and leaves essentially zero residual drift following an earthquake. - Integrated Value: Tipping’s unconventional seismic solutions helped the design team meet the project’s safety and sustainability goals within the budget constraints of affordable housing. - Sustainable Integration: A recipient of a GreenPoint Innovation Credit, this seismically resilient building requires less, if any, demolition and rebuilding in the event of an earthquake than a typical design, thus saving materials from landfill.
