In 2025 I am trying to practice acknowledging my own accomplishments instead of bashfully sweeping them under the rug. So here’s a thing that happened to me last fall that I think deserves a permanent post. I am incredibly grateful & proud to carry on my family’s legacy of creating beautiful & effective artworks for our community. Four generations of Schmidts have dutifully taken on this mission together & individually. Words fall short when trying to express my joy in being passed the brush, and I take this tradition seriously. Pictured here is my Mom, Lisa, who taught me everything I know about business & being self-sufficient. My grandfather, Walter, who chose to carry on his father’s legacy. Walter passed in 2024 and I have complicated feelings surrounding our relationship but all the same, I feel proud to call him mine. There is a photo of Walter, his mom Marie and his siblings in front of his father’s sign-painting “truck”. And lastly, my great-grandfather Otto, who was our family’s first sign-painter. He famously immigrated to the US and travelled across the country sustaining on sign-painting alone until he fell in love with a mormon girl in Utah & started the legacy of Schmidt Signs. Not pictured are the many women and girls in our family who supported us all as we helped to sustain our family through this craft. They are worth mentioning and we wouldn’t be without them, namely Barbara & Sandra, both girls whom I love very much. Thank you so much to anyone who has hired me or believed in me a long the way. You all are a part of our story of the Schmidt Family of Sign-Painters. I love & appreciate you all. ♥ And thanks to the Salt Lake Tribune for telling a snippet of our story.

@tiny_shley Get to know more about local artist Shley featured at Boxey . “I grew up running around in my family-owned sign shop. Painting & artistry not only runs in my blood, but it’s how I communicate with the world. It’s my favorite thing to do.” . Shley’s finished work will be featured at 2720 S West Temple at @goboxey . . 🎥 @jetpackjohnson_

Several years ago I made myself a “color wheel” painting to visualize color combos while painting at the studio. In the years since I ran into a situation where someone really needed that painting, so I let it loose. I finally got around to making myself a new version for the studio. I hope you like how it turned out ✶

Super cool to work with your heroes for a legendary local institution such as Lagoon. Thanks so much for having me, Dave! Additional thanks to Adam at Lagoon for reaching out ! ✶

I’m super grateful to have earned the trust of all my clients with their wonderful local businesses. Thanks so much to Dalton of Horseshoe Tattoo in Vernal, Utah! He did six hours round trip of driving just to pick up this lil’ sign. Borders heavily inspired by a sign-painter I love and admire, the formidable Ken Davis of @spellbound_signs . Look him up & give him a follow if you know what’s good for ya . Anyway, here’s a thing I painted again, hehehe. Love you, have a great day ☻ ♥ ✿
