*Carrie Bradshaw’s Voice* And there I was, amidst the applause and confetti, with Christopher Nolan by my side, a degree in Film & TV in hand, and a sprained ankle reminding me of the unexpected twists life throws our way, I couldn’t help but wonder, was this the final scene or just the beginning of my sequel? — From daydreaming about wearing NYU’s violet gowns, sparked by seeing the Sprouse Twins at their graduation on my tumblr feed at age 14, to the moment I got into the summer program at NYU during my sophomore year of high school to understand more about the college process, I didn’t realize I was doing it alone and defying all odds. Cut to two years later, opening my admission letter on the 7 train, screaming ‘ I GOT INTO NYU’ — the busiest train of all of Queens, suddenly became quiet. I started crying and strangers clapped, some even congratulated me. From that moment, I knew so badly I was destined for so much more. Being the first in my family to navigate the college chaos and diving into the arts felt like stepping in uncharted territory, but 4 and 1/2 years later, strutting ( I limped with a sprained ankle) across that Radio City stage felt like the climax of whatever film this is, where the character finally realizes their worth. I did it – just a Colombian girl from Queens who dared to dream. Though NYU threw its curveballs, I’m grateful for every lesson learned, every friend and colleagues I’ve made and every project I’ve worked on. This week, I stand tall (I’m 4’11) and ready to craft the stories I’ve always wished for. I hope to represent Queens and tell every story about the underbelly of New York City. Here’s to all the kids that went to public school, the kids that came from low income immigrant families and the kids that ran through the streets of city, unaware that we live in the best city in the world, this one is for you. This isn’t just a ceremony, a degree or a school; it’s my entire universe. To taking more risks, chasing dreams, and savoring every ‘I made it’ victory.
