I believe in reproductive freedom. Every woman deserves the right to have autonomy over their own body.
Hearing Hadley and the others share their stories last night was a reminder of the courage it takes to survive, let alone thrive, in a world that often denies women their fundamental rights… And has moved me to share my own.
I preface this by saying that what I had to deal with in no ways compares to theirs and the hardships they’ve had to face. I am in awe of their resilience and strength.
I had an abortion when I was much younger, during my first real relationship. Even now, I can barely type out that word without feeling a crippling amount of guilt and shame. As a young woman from a deeply conservative Chinese family, I could not bear to tell anyone else except one of my sisters. I remember, during the process, feeling so alone, curled up on the bathroom floor and crying because of the pain and the shame. But, now, I free myself of this shame by releasing it out into the world.
I am soo fcking grateful I had a choice. I had to travel to America though to make this choice, which should be a fundamental right for women to exercise everywhere. What if that option hadn’t existed? That is the reality many women face today. My heart breaks for all the little girls and all the women out there who are denied this basic right.
This November, voting is crucial. We can’t go backwards. Let us take back our power.
“Kamala Harris for the people.”
Do you remember where you were when the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade?
I remember I was on a brand trip having a blast when I read the news. My heart fell through the floor in despair and shock and I thought to myself, is this the beginning of the end?? It felt like we were slowly going back to the dark ages.
We cannot sit by as women’s rights continue to be stripped away. Women across the country are continuing to feel the ripple effect of the overturning of Roe v. Wade and one thing we can all agree on is that it has gone too far.
It is so important to do whatever you can, but first and foremost we must vote in this coming election. We’re not going back. 🙏 @flotus
