Meet Tim Ross (@timrss ), a visual artist based in The Hague and part of Lighthouse 2025–2026. His practice interrogates the politics of representation in relation to war, German historical memory, and contemporary imaginaries of violence. Working closely with archival material, Ross draws on photographic negatives produced by his grandfather during the Second World War. By reactivating and recontextualising these images, he explores how meaning shifts between testimony, silence, and projection, foregrounding the ambiguities of memory and intergenerational entanglements of complicity. His work also examines the ethics of viewing and the infrastructures that shape how images circulate. Engaging with questions of spectatorship, he reflects on how violence is mediated, how indifference becomes normalised, and how the act of looking itself is implicated in power. Through juxtaposition, delay, and process-based approaches, his practice resists the immediacy of contemporary image culture and opens space for critical reflection. During Lighthouse 2025–2026, Ross will continue developing ‘Hermann’, a project rooted in his grandfather’s archive and expanded through his research publication ‘On Politics of Perception (Cans of Worms)’. The work considers how images of violence are encountered today, particularly through social media, and invites the audience into an ongoing dialogue. Rather than a fixed outcome, Ross approaches his practice as a continuous process, an evolving inquiry into the role and responsibility of images.

On Politics of Perception (Cans of Worms), 2025 Design: Anna Silva Zeller - @ssilvvva ; 170 x 230mm, 304 pages Composed of different artistic, contextual references and works by Tim Ross, On Politics of Perception uses Tim’s grandfather’s archive from WWII as a point of departure to criticise and reflect on contemporary image culture and consumption. The book focuses on questions regarding depictions of violence and our personal interactions with screen-based realities. The interrogative nature of the publication passes through emotional, intellectual and artistic layers—considering topics that sometimes drown in the midst of our everyday. It aims to address the complex relationship we have with the image—an object we interact with on a daily basis, yet barely know how to decipher and often blindly trust. #DerGreifXMelkwegexpo: German visual artist and researcher Tim Ross (@timrss ) uses his grandfather’s WWII archive as a starting point to explore memory, power, and the politics of perception. His large-scale installation "Hermann" laser-engraves a reprinted wartime negative onto OD-shelter canvas, merging image and object while inviting viewers to confront the blurred boundaries between truth, fabrication, and mediated experience. Alongside the installation, Ross’s process publication On Politics of Perception expands the inquiry, weaving together over 70 artistic and contextual references into a layered reflection on violent imagery, language, and collective memory. 🗓️ Arty Party: Photography Graduates 2025 📍 Melkweg Expo, Amsterdam 📅 12 September – 12 October 2025 🎉 Opening reception: 12 September, 5:30–8:30 PM Ross was nominated by Der Greif’s Community Manager and Program Curator Francesca Hummler (@fransangle ) for this year’s Arty Party at Melkweg Expo (@melkwegexpo ) during her scouting trip earlier this year to KABK’s (@royalacademyofart.thehague ) BA Photography (@kabkphotography ) graduate exhibition. 🔗 Read the full interview on dergreif.org #TimRoss #MelkwegExpo #documentaryphotography #DerGreif #artistfeature #DerGreifMagazine #DerGreifArticles #photobook #politicsofperception #memoryandpower
