A huge thanks to the great @dougal.b.mckenzie for the foreword (below) to the show, really honoured !

“We are often led to suppose that the painter must be something of a resistor to fashion and, to quote Philip Guston, “Go deep, deep - underground, in fervent belief.” There is certainly something to this idea, but it all depends on what the fashions are up above at street level. To take Guston’s words another way, what if that belief is simply one of devotion to painting, even when the prevailing fashions deem it otherwise? Tim Patrick’s exhibition of new work is certainly one that speaks strongly to the painting life pure and simple. Pure certainly, but not so simple. His paintings are full of the evidence of looking hard, first at life and then at the canvas, and how to translate a view of that world into pure painterly action. More often than not he achieves this beautifully, though not with élan or finesse. Guston knew these actions to be the enemy of painting. Tim Patrick’s work is not a bravura spectacle, neither is it the sort which one might equate with an academic school of painting - his inclusion in the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize in 2025 underlines that he is viewed by his peers as nothing other than an important contemporary painter. His approach follows in the footsteps of those such as the Canadian Tom Thompson (who in turn was to influence the Group of Seven) through to David Park and the Bay Area Figurative Movement, all of whom remain touchstones for many other contemporary painters today. Such painters (who remain above ground amidst the light and the shade, for that is where their subject matter is to be found) make forceful arguments for their own brand of fervent belief. Tim Patrick is very much part of this ongoing movement, and his paintings add another voice to it in new and exciting ways.”

Yesterday was my first day as the new Freelands Fellow at @belfastschoolofart at @ulsteruni . It’s such a generous and fantastic opportunity to spend a year working alongside the students at the uni, in a brilliant painting department with a gorgeous studio! Thank you so much to the @freelandsfoundation for the opportunity, and to the students and painting staff at Belfast School of Art for having me …looking forward to the year ahead, and the mentorship of @dougal.b.mckenzie !
…..also, really chuffed with the painting table I built, though I don’t think it’ll stay clean for long ☺️

‘When Altitude becomes form’
Altitude is an exhibition conceived as a multi-year, perhaps even decade-long, project, bringing together landscape paintings recorded with a title addition, according to their height above sea level. Each work registers a specific altitude, using metres as both a factual or estimated measurement and a conceptual anchor. Through this cumulative approach, Altitude proposes landscape not as a fixed genre, but as an ongoing act of observation shaped by geography, data, and lived experience.

five-times-five explores the invisible networks that connect London’s creative community through the simple act of invitation. Starting with five artists who each invite one artist, who invites another…. the exhibition traces these connections to reveal how practices, communities, and ideas flow through our creative ecosystem. Based on the original concept behind two-plus-two; five-times-five extends this invitation model connecting twenty five artists in a salon style exhibition. TWO-PLUS-TWO is an initiative set up by TWO Acme Glassyard studio holders - painter Lee Johnson and sculptor Poppy Whatmore.

Happy New Year ! ….A few studies for the big painting I’ve been working on the past few months…some of these feel like real messes and failures at the time, but looking at them now I kind of like the looseness and play …

Almost finished… been working on and off on this for the past few months as part of my @elizabethgreenshieldsfdn grant…hopefully to show in the new year! Has been really exciting to have a painting evolve over so much space, taking pieces out of the studio to work on in situ around the lake here…will hopefully have finished in the next few weeks :)
