This commission was really hard.
Client wanted a July poster that celebrated “kinky queer America” and, if I’m being honest, I am not interested in celebrating America at all.
ICE is terrorizing my neighborhood as we speak, our tax dollars continue to fund genocide and concentration camps. My trans friends are stockpiling healthcare supplies and avoiding public restrooms like the plague. Every new development in AI has brought disastrous consequences and has further speedrun the country’s decent into fascism. The plaque on lady liberty is a fucking joke. (call me a huddled mass the way I’m TIRED and POOR.)
What I am interested in celebrating is the people who live in America. The immigrants, the kinksters, the queerdos. This country can fuck all the way off (I hope it crumbles in my lifetime) but I do hope, through it all, the people who make living here magical survive.
This piece is dedicated to the communities that thrive despite this country’s best efforts to eradicate us. America may not want us, but I do. Give ME your tired, your poor, your kinky, your queer, your ‘illegal’ and your ‘alien’, your oppressed and your marginalized. Together we can survive to see America fall and something beautiful take its place.
