Last week, the Greens and the Coalition teamed up to water down our Bill to abolish good character references in sentencing once an offender is found guilty of a crime. With their amendments, domestic violence offenders can still rely on good character references to lower their sentence. Murderers can still rely on good character references to lower their sentence. This is despite a NSW Parliamentary Committee inquiry considering the legislation and recommending no changes to the Government’s reforms, and an independent NSW Sentencing Council report recommending ‘good character’ be removed as a mitigating factor for all offences. This is part of the petty political games being played in the Upper House, where the Greens and the Coalition are protecting and siding with Mark Latham, and stalling the passage of important legislation. The NSW Labor Government is not interested in stalling important legislation and have voted for the watered down Bill, which abolishes good character references for sexual violence offenders, but only sexual violence offenders. But we will not turn our backs on victim-survivors of other crimes. The Attorney-General will reintroduce this Bill to the House to continue the fight for victim-survivors.

One easy health check could have saved my Dad's life. Last night in Parliament I had the opportunity to tell the story of how I lost my dad during a debate on Men's Health. It is so important to stay on top of your health, get all the appropriate checks, because even the most healthy person may have underlying health conditions.

Helping people living with complex and long term mental health needs to transition from long-stay hospital care back into the community 🤝 These homes will be the first of their kind in NSW, providing on-site, 24/7 clinical and psychosocial support and designed to create a safe, therapeutic environment that supports recovery, while helping residents build skills needed for more independent community living. These new homes form part of a record $3.1 billion mental health investment by the NSW Government to build a better New South Wales where people can get the support they need. Construction is expected to start this year, following planning approval, and residents are expected to move into the first new homes from 2028.
