Practice makes perfect.
Whether you hunt with a bow or a rifle, you owe it to the animal to be a master at your weapon. For that to happen it will require persistence on your part to practice as much as possible and to study the game you are hunting. @eastmanshuntingjournals has a great video on shot placement and I would recommend it to all. Frontal shots are not what most hunters hope for, but they are possible and you should be ready if they present themselves.
We patterned these elk from multiple hunts and waited until the wind was perfect before we pursued them. I had ranged every possible bush/tree and rock the elk could pass by in an attempt to be one step ahead of them. To be honest, the elk normally went broadside at about 30 yards to my location but not this time. Instead, the bull came around the tree directly at me, I settled my pins, and let the practice that I put in go to work.

After weeks of glassing and miles upon miles of walking, it all came together on the same day for both Justin and I.
With one day left in archery season, I connected with this bull at 12 yards. It was unbelievable. Then 10 short hours later, Justin laid it down on his bull at 45 yards.
I’m jacked to have finally notched my tag but I’m bummed it’s all over with. The last few weeks have been some of best hunting I have ever experienced. Stay tuned for more more details including the video of my shot.
