On February 7 of 2020 I took the video you see in the first slide of this post. That was the day I decided I was done doing drag everyday for the rest of my life. In 13 days, I celebrate 5 years on Testosterone. Throughout my life I've been preparing and putting on a show for anyone who would watch. My gender was the first performance piece I ever did, and it lasted a lifetime. Gender was taught to me in a way much like politics; full of contradictions, disregarding awareness but lacking care. Doesn't make much sense to a kid to be told men are providers when the only people working and providing in my house were women. My examples of manhood were all pitiful, but none of that made me who I am now. I'm not a man because I missed out on something, I'm a man because of the women who taught me how to be one. I was never ashamed of being a girl, I loved being a girl so much that I still dress like one, I'm not ashamed when someone calls me 'She', even if they are being evil in their intent, I was firmly taught there is nothing wrong with being a girl and I will stand by that, even in my transness. Even if it means I get misgendered till the day I die, I will honor the legacy of the women who raised me. I won't pretend to be a palatable boy to make you comfortable, I wont correct you when you misgender me because I dont care, and you know better. Call me a girl. I love women, I loved being one and I love being able to be a boy shaped by girlhood, not ashamed of it. I'll never be a macho man, because I don't want to be. I want to be truthful, genuine, compassionate, silly, full of love and generosity. I don't know any men like that, so I created him. I was 10 years old when I realized I wasn't a girl, but I kept up the performance anyway. If I had a magic wand and could do it all over again, I would not change a thing. In every lifetime, because we are not going anywhere, ever, no matter how hard you try to eradicate us. Happy Trans Day of Visibility. #tdov
Commissioned piece of a quilted crane for @eugenerideher for a performance of 'Cranes in the Sky during @madeinasia.fest with bling added by Mr. Rideher himself! Loved working on this with you, even tho I changed my idea 30-leven times 🫣 Thank you for getting me back behind the sewing machine and being patient with my process ❤️
Made with all reused textiles. There is nearly 100 million tons of textile waste produced every year. As an artist, educator, and environmentalist it's important to me that I source materials in the most sustainable way possible; so there are still beautiful beaches and incredible wildlife for future generations to live among, for every insect population dying out due to habitat destruction, for every person, even those who don't care what happens after they leave. Every clothing piece I've ever owned gets repurposed into something new. No new shit 2026, 2027, 2028, and forever after that. Make something new out of what you have, or what you can find.
More stitching, mending, and reuse for now and forever.
