How does perception change what we think we’re seeing?
Tim’s Electric Parallax explores the idea of perceived displacement. Particularly how an object shifts as the viewer’s position changes.
In doing so, it asks what is real, and how much of that reality can truly be trusted.

From fire to shimmer✨
How do you make glass feel like water in motion?
Here, Cymba is polished in the hotshop after undergoing battuto, an ancient technique of carving the glass surface facet by facet, breaking the surface so light can shimmer and shift with the viewer.
Colour appears to float within the form, creating depth and quiet movement, like looking into rippling water. See how the surface transforms from fire to finished form.
For more information on Tim Rawlinson’s Cymba, DM us to inquire.

One of three new series by Tim Rawlinson, created especially for our Spring Open House.

Cymba, Latin for boat, takes its name from the moment light finds water.
Not the surface itself, but what happens to it. The shimmer. The shift. The way a reflection never quite holds still.
Tim achieves this through the ancient technique of battuto, a technique of cutting directly into the glass, facet by facet, until the surface fractures light the way water does. The colours beneath appear suspended, as if seen through a slow ripple.
Move around it, and the glass moves with you.

Tim Rawlinson at work in the Devereux & Huskie’s studio, creating new pieces for Collect.
A glass artist based at London Glassblowing, Tim studied Architecture before finding his calling in glass at Buckinghamshire New University. Since graduating in 2011, he’s become known internationally for work that questions how we perceive objects - their form shifting depending on viewpoint, light, and the observer’s position.
Each piece begins at the furnace before moving to the cold studio, where Tim cuts and polishes the glass over weeks. The process is meticulous: hot-working sets the foundation, cold-working reveals what lies within.
His work asks: what is the real thing? What can be trusted as truth? In glass that bends and refracts light, the answer keeps changing.
