🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.71 ‘Show Me How’ by Men I Trust. I thought it would be fun to use this bassline as an opportunity to compare some of my basses and see how they sound. I chose a preset for each bass that I thought best suited the song 🙂 However, I used the same pick for all of them and played palm-muted. I think every bass has its own special vibe, and it's great how that goes with the song without being "wrong" for it. I was most surprised by how well the $120 bass I bought a few months ago performed. Which one is your favorite? Besides all the comparisons, I love this track! 😄 A bassline that will live in your head for days. Men I Trust always delivers! 💪 I’m a huge fan! It’s definitely worth checking out! Jessy Caron @onclejazz is killing’ it on bass!!! 🔥🔥🔥 My conclusion: You don't need an expensive bass to make good music. Cheap basses can really surprise you, and some music/songs like this call for something special, not a high-end boutique bass. Work on your craft and be creative! ...As a side note, I still love all my “expensive” gear, but not because it's expensive. I love it because it feels and sounds great. You can find that in every price category. 😉✌️ I hope this helps. (HX Stomp Presets -> link on my profile) All and any feedback is welcome! 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.86 ‘24K Magic - Live from the 2016 American Music Awards’ by Bruno Mars. I don't think I need to say much about this song. Since its release in 2016, it has become a classic for me. The original song has an amazing bassline, and this live version from the 2016 American Music Awards is even better. I love the last part of the arrangement, which has a completely different vibe, which is mainly brought to life by the different bassline. All the hits and unison lines are awesome! It’s definitely not easy to play and worth checking out! Jamareo Artis is killin' it on bass!!! 🔥🔥🔥 I’m using the @official_line6 HX Stomp with my ’Aguilar AMP’ preset for a warm und punchy solid-state amp sound, which fits this kind of stuff very nicely 🤍 This preset has become my go-to for many things, and I really like it! (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) Bass is tuned down a half step! ⬇️ Hope this helps. All and any feedback is welcome! Ok, thanks, bye ------------------------------ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.107 ‘Greasy G’ by Joshua Redman Elastic Band. Bassist: @officialmeshell is killing’ it on bass! 🔥🔥🔥 Joshua Redman is one of the most prominent jazz saxophonists of his generation. He has created many legendary songs and albums, one of which is the 2005 album Momentum. The album features many "supergroup" moments. In addition to Redman's usual bandmates, the album also features musicians like Flea, Questlove, Brian Blade, Meshell Ndegeocello, Eric Krasno, and many more. One of my favorite songs from the album is "Greasy G," almost entirely thanks to Meshell Ndegeocello's bassline. 🔥 Her PHRASING and POCKET are so "greasy" that the whole track feels swampy and visceral. Meshell is famous for her "less is more" approach. She doesn't overplay; she creates a massive groove that makes everyone sound better. As always, I tried my best to capture the vibe of this track. 😄 I hope this inspires you to learn it yourself! 🙏 Also: "Greasy G" is a pure, refined funk exercise. It's one of the few times Redman steps away from the "jazz" lens to fully embrace a heavy urban funk aesthetic. Besides the greasy phrasing and pocket, I fell in love with Meshell's pure and honest jazz bass tone. I took that as an approach for me and just used my @bassmods Jazz Bass with @drstrings Fat Beams, boosted some treble to get a bit more string noise, and the Cali76 bass comp from @origineffects for some subtle compression. I also use the CAPO DI by @jad.freer as a clean platform to send the sound to my interface and DAW. Hope this helps. All and any feedback is welcome! As a huge fan of the album Voodoo, I thought, "Why not create a preset that represents Pino's entire signal chain during the Electric Lady Studio Sessions?" I started doing some research to make sure I was up to date. 😄 Pino said in a guitar world interview: “I plugged into a miked Ampeg B-15, and I'm pretty sure that was the only signal we took.” He also explained: “I played either my '63 P-Bass tuned down to D or my Moon Larry Graham signature 4-string tuned down to C#. Both had heavy-gauge La Bella flatwounds, which can be rough on necks; that's originally why I tuned down the Precision.” (published October 20, 2025) The preset is mainly based on a miked Ampeg B-15 bass amp. After further research, I added studio gear to achieve a "produced" sound, as well as a “TONE OFF” option that takes you straight into the Voodoo vibe by emulating the tone knob of a P Bass. Alternatively, you can turn it off and use the tone knob on your bass to find the sweet spot for your playing style. The B-15 amp+cab block sounds great on its own, too!!! 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.107 ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel)’ by D’Angelo. In this video, I want to highlight TWO HIDDEN GEMS from D'Angelo's classic "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" that you might not know about. This track is a neo-soul masterclass, with an unmatched swing feel that gives the song its deep, soulful, and slightly “drunk” JDilla groove. Questlove said it perfectly: "We wanted it to feel like it was about to fall apart, but never actually does." The bassline isn't flashy. Instead, it focuses on space, note placement, phrasing, and tone. Knowing when not to play is just as important as playing the right notes! Raphael uses a lot of slides in this song! Especially at the end, he is very playful. As always, I tried my best to capture the vibe of this track. 😄 I hope this inspires you to learn it yourself! 🙏 Raphael Saadiq is playing the bass on this track!!! (Sry I got that wrong in the video text🤦🏽‍♂️) As a huge fan of the album Voodoo, I thought, "Why not create a preset that represents Pino's entire signal chain during the Electric Lady Studio Sessions?" 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.106 ‘Good Love Is One The Way’ by John Mayer Trio. John Mayer’s "Good Love Is on the Way," from the Live in LA album, is still one of the most celebrated riffs in modern blues-rock. Built around an A7 or A Mixolydian feel, the riff mainly alternates between the root (A) and G as bass notes. Every guitar player knows this riff, so why shouldn't every bassist? 😄 I've known this song for years and thought of it about a week ago. It was so much fun to learn! The original riff uses a lot of open strings and makes great use of the tension between a fretted F♯ and an open G string. This wasn't very pleasant for me on bass due to the lower register, so I changed the riff a bit to make it more fitting for the bass guitar. And of course, I had to use a pick and some drive! 😄🙌 I hope this inspires you to learn it yourself! Of course, the legendary Pino Palladino is killin' it on bass! 🔥 To emulate the bass tone on the record, I'm using my @fendercustomshop P Bass with @drstrings Pure Blues and running it through the @official_line6 HX Stomp using my trusty "Ampeg SVT” preset. I use the CAPO DI by @jad.freer as a clean platform to send the sound to my interface and DAW. (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) Hope this helps. All and any feedback is welcome! 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.105 ‘Pure Love’ by Hayley Williams. I’ve been a huge fan of Hayley Williams since the Paramore album “Riot!”. She is a true powerhouse, and her solo albums are really inspiring! Each song has unique sonic aesthetics and is the perfect combination of weird yet commercial. The bass always plays a huge part in her music and Joseph "Joey" Quinn Howard is a big reason for that. 😄🙌 I love all the chordal stuff he plays on a lot of songs and how he accompanies the music with the bass. The song "Pure Love" has a more straightforward bass part, but oh man, it's a perfect bassline that I could play for days! 🔥 The note choices, rhythms, and tones are just top-shelf! The verse features a really cool, syncopated, busy riff. The chorus opens with a few more long notes, but it still maintains the busy, syncopated feel. I highly recommend checking it out and really getting into the groove. @jellyquinn is killing’ it on bass! 🔥🔥🔥 To emulate the bass tone on the record, I'm using my Dynacord Texas Bass with nylon tapewound strings. I'm running it through the @official_line6 HX Stomp using my trusty "Ampeg B15 Clean" preset, and then into the clean CAPO DI by @jad.freer . (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) Hope this helps. 🎼 'Smooth Bass Licks' No.64 ‘Satisfied’ by @familycompanymusic , Jonah Smith. Bassist: @alexkyhn 🔥 You should definitely check out this band! Enjoy! In terms of sound, I went pretty old school. I used a B-15 sound from the @official_line6 HX Stomp and my @epiphone Jack Casady with @labellastrings flats. I love it! 💛 (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) All and any feedback is welcome! A few years ago, I played an AD200 in a band and loved its warm, slightly fuzzy sound. 🧡 Now, I would like to share with you my adaptation of that sound within the HX Stomp. - “Clean" represents a relatively clean recreation of the amp, while - "Terror" represents a fuzzier sound. I found this combination to be the most usable inside the HX Stomp. It’s a great all-rounder. It sounds great in genres like rock, stoner rock, indie, alternative, blues, soul, pop, and punk. It works well when used in front of an amp to add character, and is also ideal for IEMs. I've refined this preset in various situations and I'm very happy with it. I love this preset and I hope it is as useful for you as it is for me! 🙏 (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) All and any feedback is welcome! 🎸 'Basslines I Love and Why'. No.104 ‘Aviva-Me’ by Jéssica Augusto. I have to admit that I chose this song less for its bassline and more for its energetic vibe and the space it gives to the bass. (The drums are going crazy, too!🔥) Don't get me wrong; the bass is great in this track. The sound, lines, and pocket are all great. I love it! Tracks like this are great for practicing pentatonic runs of every kind because of the steady harmony, groove, and simple easy-to-follow melody. The track is in D minor, and I'm thinking about incorporating D minor, A minor, F major, and C major pentatonic scales over the different chords. For me, it's all about the approach and developing ideas. So this is a version of me playing parts the way I would play them. 😉✌️ I’m playing my new @bassmods K534 Bass w/ @drstrings Fat-Beams into the @official_line6 HX Stomp with my trusty ’FLY RIG’ preset, then into the clean CAPO DI by @jad.freer . (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) Hope this helps. All and any feedback is welcome! Ok, thanks, bye ------------------------------ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. I do not own any rights to this music. 🎼 'Smooth Bass Licks' No.63 ‘Fly’ by Tone Stith. Bassist: I’m not completely sure who to credit for this basslick. Let me know if you know more about it! Is that a basslick right at the beginning of the chorus? Oh, ok, cool. Enjoy! I’m using the HX Stomp from @official_line6 with my ‘FLY RIG’ preset into the clean CAPO DI. I’m also playing my @bassmods K534 Bass w/ @drstrings Fat-Beams. (HX Stomp Preset -> link on my profile) All and any feedback is welcome!
