From those ashes, he built the most legendary Polynesian palace in the Midwest — complete with volcano bowls, Mystery Girls, and flaming Moai heads. 🌴🍹

Aloha, tiki fanatics and retro adventurers! 🌴🍹 Grab your lei, cue the steel guitar, and pour yourself the Kahiki’s legendary Mystery Drink—because we’re sailing into the rum-soaked saga of the Grass Shack, the scrappy little Columbus tiki bar that set the stage for the jaw-dropping Kahiki Supper Club.
📅 Late 1950s — America’s obsessed with tropical escape. Trader Vic’s is shaking rum in Oakland, the Mai-Kai is dazzling Florida, and two Columbus restaurateurs, Bill Sapp and Lee Henry, decide Ohio deserves its own Polynesian paradise. Their test lab? A bamboo-wrapped hideaway called The Grass Shack—dim lights, WWII vets swapping Pacific war stories, and experimental cocktails strong enough to make a Moai dance.
And oh, those drinks. Born here was the Mystery Drink—a theatrical masterpiece served in a smoking volcano bowl, orchid leis flown in from Hawaii twice a week, and delivered by the “Mystery Girl” in a ritual worthy of Hollywood. Inspired by a 1921 South Seas travelogue (yes, absinthe was involved), it became the Kahiki’s crown jewel.
🔥 June 14, 1959—Bill Sapp’s birthday—the Grass Shack goes up in flames. Manager calls: “Boss, we got a fire here.” Bill, ever cool: “Well, put it out.” Minutes later: “Boss… we no open tomorrow.” The Shack was gone, leaving only rare matchbooks and plenty of smoke-scented memories.
But like a tiki phoenix, from the ashes rose The Kahiki in 1961—a $1 million, Moai-flanked, waterfall-filled temple to escapism. It had fire-breathing fireplaces, a monkey fountain named George, and celebs from Zsa Zsa Gabor to Bob Hope sipping Polynesian bliss. At its peak, the Kahiki sold 18,000 tropical drinks a month, with the Mystery Drink stealing the spotlight every time.
