Thrice Remix outro riffage 🎸
Thanks so much to everyone who’s listened and hello to all the new followers! 👋 the response to this has been amazing for me and even slightly surreal, think my brain is still catching up but I’m extremely grateful for the support!
For most of the remix I opted towards electronic Downtempo IDM vibes and a bit of Drum & Bass with the choruses, but the outro shifts to this heavy chaotic 8-string + DOOM-inspired synth bass wig-out. What?
The way I found out about Thrice was via another band I’m a fan of, Architects (also on Epitaph); i grew up in the same hometown as them and also rehearsing at the same studio, often in the rooms right next door back in their early days. Pretty sure I can remember them explaining in interviews that Thrice was one of their major influences, which is how I discovered their tracks like Music Box, Of Dust & Nations and Firebreather, and from there the rest of the discography.
I thought it’d be fun or a nice thing to also slightly reference another band that Thrice have inspired here with this section, sorta like the chain of influences coming full-circle and colliding together in this part of the track.
Also it is just quite fun to play.
I’ve been a fan of @luo_music (aka Josh Trinnaman) since our UK/EUR tour manager shared their unique, genre-fusing music with me about a decade ago — big grooves, big riffs, big EDM hooks, dynamics, atmosphere. Luo checks a lot of boxes for me, and has been in heavy rotation ever since. I’d come to find out several years later that Josh grew up listening to Thrice, and the admiration for each other’s work was mutual.
We’ve tried to do a remix or two for every record we’ve put out recently, and I thought it’d be fun to see what Luo could do with a Horizons/West track this time around. “Undertow” fit the bill perfectly, and Josh did a great job of staying true to the core of the original song, while pushing some boundaries, and taking some unexpected turns. Hope you all dig his take on “Undertow”.

Delighted to present this - I’ve been a fan of Thrice for over 2 decades and several of their albums were prominent soundtracks during my teen years & early 20s. Especially Vheissu and The Alchemy Index; these albums played a big part in me picking up a guitar and trying to write tracks myself in Logic.
When @rileybreck invited me to remix, I was stunned and kinda terrified but also over the moon. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work on this, so a huge thanks to Riley and team for hooking this up! 🙏
I’ve used pretty much every bit of gear and every production trick up my sleeve on this one. Hope it’s a fun listen!
