Black Miller House is an extensive alteration and extension to an existing rural dwelling at Black Miller Stream, Kaikōura. The project transforms a modest house into a series of contemporary pavilions embedded within a coastal hill landscape, retaining portions of the original structure while introducing new living and sleeping wings. Rather than replacing the original building, the design works through selective demolition, retention, and expansion to create a cohesive architectural composition that respects the site’s history while enabling long-term occupation and short-term gathering. 📷 @david_._straight @blackmillerkaikoura

We’re honoured to have three projects recognised in this year’s Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Awards. Sincere thanks to our clients for their trust and collaboration, and to the consultants, contractors, and suppliers whose expertise and care helped bring these projects to life. Thank you also to the NZIA and the jury for acknowledging work that reflects a collective effort behind each design / building. These awards are a meaningful recognition of what’s possible when thoughtful architecture is supported by strong relationships and shared vision. We’re proud to contribute to the built environment in Aotearoa and grateful to everyone who played a part in these projects.

Westshore House. Overlooking the waterfront in Hawkes Bay this family home is based on strong contemporary forms and a pared back palette. With extensive glazing towards the view and street frontage the design of this home provides both engagement & privacy with a private courtyard behind the main forms. 📷 @hazelredmond_ 🔨 @jpw.builders

RHR House. Drawing ideas from place and environment through materials and colour palette RHR House has an initial composition that is brutal, but simple, reminiscent of a boat moored next to a wharf. The arrival is one of slow reveal with pauses in time, following a timber board walk you are drawn to a soft green stair form floating from the concrete floor above. This leads upwards to the entry door, semi concealed and casual, like you would find in a seaside Bach. Once inside you arrive in the kitchen the pivot point of the house, from which all other spaces work off, lounge, dining, and outdoor living which offers shelter from the dominant easterly sea breeze. Employing a minimalist palette of materials both inside and out RHR House features insitu concrete, white-painted steel, corrugated cladding, and fiberglass screens. Inside, natural plywood timber, black MDF, and black rubber are used, creating a stark but welcoming contrast. 📷 - @david_._straight Structural Engineering - Ruamoko Solutions Build - T&A Construction Landscaping - Studio Botanic

Stoked to take away an award for @rhr_house at the 2024 HERE awards! Huge thank you to @thisishere.nz and judges @simonfarrellgreen @prue_j and @oli__booth and photographer @david_._straight “Elevated above the floodplain, and designed to withstand liquefaction, this house is greater than the sum of its engineering. The home uses materials in surprising and delightful ways, but manages to feel cohesive: making a virtue of a problem is one thing, but making it look effortless is quite another”

The Birdwood - Focusing on warmth and tactility, The newest addition to The Birdwood is intended to have a mix of classic materials and texture to create an environment that feels both sophisticated and inviting, cohesive with their offering of fresh seasonal food in the heart of Beckenham. Brilliant to be a part of the story again for this local restaurant. @thebirdwoodcorner 📷 @sarahrowlandsphotography
