June 13 will cover how to refresh your denim, we will repair holes and distress pieces. We can also take in and hem your pieces during class. Think jackets, jeans and shorts.
June 27 will cover Sashiko on denim. We will hand stitch gorgeous patterns onto your pieces to give them a unique feel. There are endless thread color options so you can really get creative with this part. Stitch onto the pockets of your jeans or on the back of your favorite denim jacket. You can also stitch patterns onto the cuffs of your favorite top.
You’ll leave both dates with the confidence to take on upcycling on your own in the future. Why throw away old clothes when you can give them a new life and extend wear?

We’ve come a long way, baby. 🌱 Thread Spun circa 2018/2019 - babies in baskets, pack n plays, toy trucks. I wanted to use a mannequin to merchandise the accessories we were selling but we weren’t yet selling clothing, so I put one of my (no longer fitting) ace and jig jumpsuits on it and someone bought it that day. The shop was so small I couldn’t move around at all if people came in, I would just sit behind the console table I took from my house to use as a cash wrap. The bathroom was so small, if you weren’t willing to make the toilet a squatty potty, you weren’t using it. Our little baby shop, @kellieshay@oh.wellhellothere and a couple of babies, with @betsy.r.smith right next door. That was a fun era. This baby is 8 years old. As they say, time flies. #nostalgia
The paradox of self awareness is such that one who has it, has the capacity for deep emotional pain at the state of the world and their place within it - but also for profound appreciation, wonder and personal growth - for true happiness. If I can hold both the insane beauty of the world and its people alongside all of the horrors and injustices, well then I can begin to piece together an idea of how I, as just one person, can push for more of this insane beauty for one and all, and not just for a few. Long live the collective. Let’s make Encinitas more inclusive again. I remember the energy of 2020 and I wonder what happened. People say we’ve become Orange County. But what I know is that we are on Payómkawichum and Kumeyaay land, and that if we remember the land and her people, we can keep it funky, despite all of the cosplay everything. I’m so grateful for this Thread Spun community, without it I would have left long ago. Instead, it brought me to my closest friends, deeper relationship with the land, and a touch of self awareness 🫂
I turned 39 last week. I’m not a big birthday person and all I wanted was to spend it outside with my kids. @oh.wellhellothere and I packed up four kids, two dogs and ourselves and booked it to the wilderness. I came to the conclusion in my 30s that a big problem for a lot of people in western culture (certainly not all as I speak from a position of privilege) is that we have too much convenience in our lives. We hit a tipping point with convenience and it’s no longer helpful, but harmful. We strive for it at every turn, we are willing to sacrifice our resources and our souls and our collective sanity to huge corporations and AI. We manufacture fake problems for ourselves and one another in privileged western culture because really! we need to strive and struggle, we need a little dirt and a little grime to tie us to the real world and to our humanity. We don’t hunt for food, we don’t build shelter, anything we need we can bring to us at any moment. We are removed from the natural world, spraying it with chemicals to rid us of pests!! And weeds!!! My son asked me if Northern California waters are “shark infested”. It is so fascinating to me that we speak of the natural world in this way, when we are truly such a teeny tiny part of it (disproportionately to the amount of control we try to exert upon it). It turns out, we are not the center of the earth. For me to feel fulfilled and not manufacture fake problems to torment my friends and neighbors with, I need to try to build fires and carry heavy things and watch the light and wind in the trees and toss myself into bodies of water and think, THIS IS THE REASON FOR EVERYTHING! I need to be close to nature to remember why it is worth the inconvenience to protect her, to speak out for her people and all of her creatures. I need a touch of struggle. And everyone I see who has none, is creating far! too! many!problems! for everyone else in their manufactured realities that are divorced from everything the earth teaches us. And so. I need to drag my kids with me, so they don’t become this type of people. In my 30’s I started backpacking in the wilderness, and in this way, in my 30’s I found religion. #threadspunstories
