One dress sent a designer across Europe in search of answers.
In Threads #234, Summer 2026, couturière Lotte Roelofs (@atelierlotteroelofs ) retraces the construction of a Balenciaga cocktail dress from the designer’s final years, re-creating the garment by hand while uncovering clues about its structure, balance, and couture techniques along the way.
What began as a school project became a deeper study of how construction reveals a designer’s thought process, and why physically making a garment can teach lessons that archival research alone cannot. From unusual darts to sculptural shaping, the story explores what can be learned by closely observing and rebuilding historic fashion.

This Mother’s Day, we’re thinking about the women who passed down more than sewing skills. They shared creativity, resourcefulness, encouragement, and the confidence to make something with your own hands.
In “A Sewing Legacy,” Sharon Broussard reflects on how her mother pushed her toward both education and sewing, believing each offered a different kind of independence. It’s a moving tribute to the lessons, memories, and handmade traditions that stay with us for life.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmothers, and mother figures who taught us to sew! Did someone in your family teach you?

These garments survived nearly 250 years—and they still have stories to tell.
A rare new exhibition at @mount_vernon brings together three original garments worn by George Washington, offering an unusually personal look at the tailoring, textiles, and presentation choices of America’s first president. The display includes a blue wool coat, a white waistcoat and breeches set, and a red wool waistcoat, all carefully preserved and now shown together for the first time. The exhibition is on view through July 26, 2026.
Mount Vernon Chief Curator Amanda Isaac shares insight into the research behind authenticating the pieces, the significance of Washington choosing American-made wool, and what these clothes reveal about style and status in early America. You can also listen to audio clips from Isaac discussing the exhibition and the garments in detail.
