VA - Alone, I Am Afraid [2024] This compilation is dedicated to all the songs you’ve never heard. Songs that were never finished, songs that were never released, songs that weren’t good enough. In a world where perfection is ideal, find the beauty in the songs that are “imperfect.” Embrace the raw emotion, the low fidelity and the janky instrumentals. Sometimes it’s the imperfections that are most beautiful. Don’t take them for granted. - thank you, no really thank you. / Been in the process of making a follow-up to the first compilation I made in November for a while now. I started off with a completely different track-list, theme and cover/inserts until I ultimately just binned the idea altogether for a couple months. Until recently, when I was at a local flea market and found some free newspaper and magazine clippings that looked untouched. I dug around for a little bit and found the perfect one (Used for the Cover & Back). This one clipping reignited my motivation for this comp and I decided to theme it around tracks that were never officially released/demo tracks/rare tracks/whatever. Hope you enjoy! This took basically six months!! / 🔗 Link in Bio! #90semo #90shardcore #emovinyl #hardcorevinyl #hardcorerecords #skramz #hardcorearchives #emoarchive

Edaline - Live @bottomofthehillsf [2000] Edaline were an Indie/Emo band from Santa Rosa, California. They were formed in 1994 by Matt Carrillo (of Kid Dynamo and Desert City Soundtrack) and Mike Casanova and wouldn’t break up until the turn of the century. During these six years, Edaline released a demo tape, a 10” EP, a full-length album, and a live/compilation album shortly after disbanding (these guys did everything). On December 22nd, 2012, Edaline would play their first show in over 12 years at Nostalgia Fest. Plans to record new music and play more shows were in the works; however, with the news of founding member Matt Carrillo passing in early 2015, they decided that permanently disbanding was the right thing to do. Released on Petaluma label Flying Harold Records on May 11, 2000, this album compiles a live show recording at San Francisco’s The Bottom of the Hill and the band’s 1997 EP Old City Scenes. Super high-quality recordings and a great performance from the band. I’m sure it was an absolute treat seeing these guys live. This album means a lot to me, especially with the news of The Bottom of the Hill shutting down after 35 years :( . I only got to see a few shows there (one being an EAAY reunion show!), but every show I saw there was absolutely top-notch. Also really excited to see PEE and Nuzzle March at what will probably be the last show I ever attend at The Bottom of the Hill! Shoutout @joughdawnbaker for this one 🤞

This Ship Will Sink - s/t [2004] This Ship Will Sink was an extremely short lived three-piece Sassy Screamo band from New Jersey. They were only active from ‘04 to ‘05 but they managed to release two EPs and two splits. One being a three-way split with legendary New Jersey Screamo outfit The Assistant and California’s Takaru. This Ship Will Sink were raw, explosive and angry as all hell, like if Antioch Arrow and Heroin had a child. The band features Thomas Schlatter of Saetia, The Assistant, You and I..... shall I go on?.... on vocals and guitar.

Yossarian Is Drowning - Tour CDr [2005] Yossarian Is Drowning was a five-piece Screamo band from Shrewsbury, England. Existing for only one year from ’04–’05, they managed to release two demos and a four-song 7”. They later posthumously released a split with fellow English Screamo band We Are Corpses in 2009. Yossarian Is Drowning, alongside Bob Tilton, Manrae, Icarus, and a few other bands, stand out as one of the best British bands to ever do this Emo thing. Josh Murfitt (drums, guitar) would later play in Jupiter Lander! Quintessential ’00s screamo right here. Edgy song titles, xerox packaging, melodic guitars, and lo-fi recordings. I mean, come on… “Emo Gymnastics: Textbook Rules 101.” I adore this band so much, man. Love when they break out into spoken word—the British accent is the cherry on top. Yossarian Is Drowning feels like a comfort band to me. I’m always happy to sit down and listen to any of their releases.

Imbroco - Are You My Lionkiller? [2000] So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye… Imbroco were a four-piece indie/emo band from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1999 and likely disbanding shortly after the turn of the century, the band came as fast as they went—even by the genre’s standards—and only ever released a demo and a six-song EP. Despite having such a small footprint, Imbroco’s sound is still heard today, and their release Are You My Lionkiller? is highly beloved in nearly every emo circle. Whether it’s because of the members’ past and future bands or their ability to put out an EP filled with catchy melodies, soft vocals, and heartbreaking lyrics before calling it quits shortly thereafter, Imbroco have stuck with me since the beginning of my journey through emo, and I doubt that will ever change. The band included Gabriel Wiley (drums) of Mineral and Pop Unknown, Scott McCarver (guitar) of Mineral, and Matt Breedlove (bass) of Pop Unknown. Released on the legendary emo label Deep Elm Records, Are You My Lionkiller? is the first and only “official” release Imbroco ever put out. Aside from a three-song demo and a few compilation tracks (most of which appear on this EP), this is essentially all we have from the band. To me, every song has something about it, a charm, that sets it apart from the song before. Whether it be a super catchy riff, incredible vocal performance (Northstar Is an Airplane) or the lyrical content. That is to say: NO SKIPS! The EP is very much of its time and borrows a lot from the aforementioned Pop Unknown and Mineral. That isn’t to say that Imbroco didn’t add their own flare and distinct sound to it.

Two Stars Burning Sun - Learning To Sleep Past These Cloud Covered Days [2002] Two Stars Burning Sun were a three-piece Metallic Screamo band from Kalamazoo, MI. They were active from December of 2000 up until October of 2003. During their three years of activity, they put out a full length album and a three-way split with fellow Michigan bands The Nain Rouge and Today I Wait, both through Friction Records. However, they would posthumously release another full length album and a three-way split with Michigan bands The Amputation and The Sea, The Sea in 2004. Back when I hated everything metal sounding and couldn’t stand metalcore (haha times have changed).... this band completely changed everything for me. Two Stars Burning Sun dance between Screamo and Metalcore effortlessly. Blending melodic guitars and gentle singing with harsh growls and absolute chaos! The Screamo sections are heavily influenced by Orchid, as is standard practice. These guys are like if Orchid discovered stuff like Integrity and Earth Crisis (I’m sure they did but you get the point).

The Guns of August - s/t [1999] Still can’t believe I forgot to scan and post this one x_x. Anyways... THIS one is my favorite from the band. Two songs—a run time of just under eight minutes—and a life-time of memories. The second that guitar comes on.... man.... It’s just Emo perfection. Absolutely one of the best guitar performances in all of Emo on this... heck all the instruments on this are unbelievable. This whole record feels like a warm summer day; hanging out with friends, not giving a care in the world about the future, and just enjoying the now.

The Guns of August - Kicking Silver b/w Heading Out West [1999] The Guns of August were a four-piece Emo band from Houston, Texas. For how good these guys were, much of anything is known about them. We can assume that they formed some time in the late ‘90s, released two 7”s in ‘99, and called it quits right before or at the turn of the century. The band features Dwayne Cathey of The Cedar of Lebanon and The Tie That Binds on guitar and vocals! 100% some of my favorite vocals in this style of Emo. Just realized I still haven’t scanned and posted my other Guns of August 7”! Next for sure. Anyways… genuinely been trying to get my hands on a copy of this for like 4-5 years now? The Guns of August were the perfect “Vanilla” Emo band. Somewhere in-between Post-Hardcore and Indie/Emo. Think The Sky By Sorella or Old Hearts Club. As I mentioned before, the vocals on this are crazy and super unique! Really wish these guys put out a full length:(

Days In December / Sweater Weather - Split 7” [1996] Before I get into Days of December, Sweater Weather close out the split with a quick track just over two minutes. It’s a completely instrumental mathy jam. Super technical, unorthodox time signatures, almost jazz-like. Members of Radio Flyer and The Skye Corvair, to name a few! Anyways… Days in December, not to be confused with UK Post-Hardcore band of the same name, were an Indie/Emo band from Champaign, IL. Super Impressive that they only ever put out one song and it’s THIS good. However, when you look at who was actually in the band, things begin to make far more sense. Firstly, the band features Braid’s original drummer Roy Ewing. As well as, Tim Adamson and Rachael Dietkus (Roy Ewing too !) of Very Secretary and Guitarist/Vocalist Jeff Garber who now composes scores for TV Series’s. With that, it’s abundantly clear that this band was full of immensely talented musicians. While the song on this split may be the only song they OFFICIALLY put out, their live recording on WEFT Radio has become of my favorite “releases” in the genre. The amount of potential this band had is mind boggling.

Gregor - s/t 7” [1995] Formed from the ashes of fellow Detroit Emo bands Ottawa and Current, Gregor came and went like the wind. They formed early into the year of 1995 and only lasted as long as the Summer did. A four song demo tape and a two song EP is all that the band ever put out, and honestly, it’s a miracle this band even put anything out in the first place. The bands sound is very much of its time. Slow and melodic guitar, hushed vocals and the typical (post)hardcore drums. Gregor effortlessly blend Slowcore and Lo-Fi Indie with the 90s Emo sound to create a truly special record. Think Flex Lavender or Goodbye, Blue Monday. All members played in Ottawa & Current and drummer Derek Brosch would go on to play in Broken Hearts Are Blue.

VA - The Microwave Says To The Pacemaker Compilation [2004] Something of a super compilation. Released through legendary Screamo label Slave Union, The Microwave Says To The Pacemaker only features eight bands but almost every one of them is a heavy hitter in the genre. A beautiful dance between the Italian Screamo scene and the scattered scenes here in the U.S.—from Ohio, Kentucky and North Carolina to Washington and Texas. The Death of Anna Karina kicks off the compilation with a slow build and then a quick BOOM! Orchid inspired Euro Screamo. One second they’re screaming in your face and the next they moan and wail in despair. Also on this compilation is my absolute favorite Kodan Armada songs. That riff on the build up is sublime. The Assailant definitely sticks out like a sore thumb on this one. Not to mention they’re the only band I don’t know much of anything about. They’re far more Mathcore/Metalcore leaning than any of the other bands. .... Anyways all this to say that this compilation is really just a build up for the final song: The Way She Disappeared Into The Vanishing Rows Of Street Lights, Headup, Singing To The Night Sky. Texas Screamo band die, emperor! die!—Maybe you know them from their split with fellow Houston band Burned Out Bright or maybe from their split with neighboring Austin band Toru Okada. The song was originally released as “Postscript” on their Acoustic album in ‘03. The recording itself is super janky and beyond lo-fi. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was recorded through a camera or phone but that’s besides the point. The song would later be recorded with the full band and put into this release as “The Way She Disappeared Into The Vanishing Rows Of Street Lights”. I find myself struggling to put into words how to describe this song. All I can really say is that it’s one of the most incredible songs I’ve ever heard and it would be remiss of you not to listen to it.
