Alongside traditional business shirting, denim and chambray offer a more relaxed yet equally considered alternative, capable of softening the formality of tailoring.
Though often used interchangeably, they are technically distinct. Denim is typically defined by an indigo warp and white weft, most often woven in twill. Chambray, by contrast, is a plain weave with a coloured warp and white weft, originally developed for its breathability and ease of wear.
In any modern tailored wardrobe, it’s worth having a fine denim shirt and a pale-blue chambray for the summer: those two shirts work across smart and casual work environments.

As workplaces continue to relax, shirts are increasingly chosen for their versatility and ease rather than strict formality. Fabrics now sit on more of a spectrum, and selecting the right one is not always straightforward.
In general, three elements tend to make a shirt fabric more casual: larger, bolder patterns such as checks or pronounced stripes; stronger, brighter colours; and a more substantial texture.
Oxford fabric is a classic example: an Oxford shirt is inherently casual, both because of the textured weave and its long-standing cultural associations with Ivy style.
Last but not least, changing the fibre mix can add a little texture – as with linens or linen/cotton mixes.
