Thomas Kotcheff and Bryan Curt Kostors didn't set out to reinvent Cage and Feldman. They wanted to uncover what was already humming beneath the surface. Their new album Between Systems takes early piano works from the 1950s and processes them through modular synths and live electronics, revealing colors that were waiting there all along.
I talked with Kotcheff about collaborative interpretation, the moment they realized the electronics weren't competing with the piano but expanding it, and what it means to question fidelity to a score.

Thank you @newsounds for featuring ‘In a Landscape’ from Thomas Kotcheff and Bryan Curt Kostors’ new album “Between Systems” on Monday’s episode! Dropping this Friday, Oct. 3, the album questions the boundaries of classical interpretation by infusing nine Cage and Feldman piano pieces with elements of ambient music and electronica.
For Cage’s ‘In a Landscape’ Kotcheff and Kostors created a synth landscape to accompany the piano. Pads from several different synths each contribute a unique timbre to this orchestration, with a Eurorack modular synth adding evolving, shifting chords alongside the piano. The piano itself is also processed in this inventive interpretation.

For "Between Systems," @bryancurtkostors and I spent countless hours in the studio shaping every analog and digital sound side by side. Most of the album’s synthesizers were tracked live with the piano, which meant dialing in the synths or Eurorack modular until everything clicked in real time. These behind-the-scenes moments capture just a small glimpse of the patience, experimentation, and collaboration that went into bringing this music to life.
