“Colorized offers a multitude of charms, its minimalist inclinations allowing the smallest details to shine, whether opener ‘Acryl’s resonant depths, ‘Back In Time’’s subtle complexity, ‘Novelty’’s gently insistent percussive nature or the atmospheric, unison pairing of synth and piano in the title track’s quietly romantic melody. More than this, Diamond Heist’s intimate chamber music – with a modern twist – provides a masterclass in how elegance and purity can cast long shadows, its mood at once admirably hopeful and yet serenely, tenderly devastating.”

DAMAGE CONTROL out now. Debut album COLORIZED coming June 5.
”Diamond Heist is the alias of Sweden-based, award-winning producer and mastering engineer Thomas Harsem, whose debut album Colorized, the follow-up to last year’s spellbinding Piano 1 EP, is currently in completion.
Succinct lead single ‘Damage Control’ meticulously crafts a nocturnal, dreamlike vibe, its unashamedly sentimental, Debussy-esque melody lingering long after the last note has been played. Blending an upright piano with a Moog synthesizer, it’s a welcome reminder of Mark Hollis’ immortal words, “Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note, y’know? And don’t play one note unless you’ve got a reason to play it.”

« DIAMOND HEIST’s PIANO 1 EP is unusual for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it’s uncommonly beautiful, the first – as the title suggests – in a proposed series of collections of solo piano pieces as arresting as they are uncomplicated. These four compositions, however, are also unconventional in that they were neither exclusively written by the Sweden-based German, who works by day as a writer and producer as well as an acclaimed mixing and mastering engineer, nor performed by him. Instead – and, though stranger things have happened, this, too, makes the EP notable – they’re the result of an unlikely form of improvised collaboration between Thomas Harsem, who employs DIAMOND HEIST as his artistic alias, and a renowned contemporary pianist whose name remains undisclosed for contractual reasons.
“The idea developed after I’d been drafting some instrumental electronic pieces as a creative reset between projects,” Harsem, who’s earned multiple awards in each of his specialist fields, explains. “Since my piano skills are somewhat basic, I wondered what would happen if I invited a great pianist to take my compositions as a starting point to improvise.” So he passed his demos on to the anonymous instrumentalist and was stunned by their subsequent interpretations, so much so that PIANO 1 sticks almost wholly to first takes. “The simplicity of the instrument, in contrast to the signal-loaded arrangements of the pop I generally master,” Harsem enthuses, “lifted these pieces to a different level.”
PIANO 1 features four tracks, opening with the placid ‘The Walk’, whose haunting melody is teased out in the upper register, and concluding with the more sombre ‘Sequence’, its arpeggios rippling out long after its three minutes are up. In-between are two equally striking, if shorter vignettes: ‘Idle’, an immaculate piece of intimate chamber music, and the quietly romantic ‘Dream Within A Dream’. »
