“Bump in the Night presents figurative works that carouse with darkness, hum with mischief and prickle with the unsettling. All of these images take a double take. Each work lands on the border between familiarity and unease : faces glimpsed behind masks, playthings turned menacing, scenes that shimmer between rational and uncanny.
The exhibition’s title nods lightly to the world of childhood fears, shadowed corners and the dark region under the bed, but the tone never labours the gothic. The darkness here is subtler, found in moments of distortion or dissonance rather than spooky spectacle.
Across painting, collage and drawing these artists navigate the territory where humour collides with menace and beauty flirts shamelessly with unease. Bump in the Night is less about fear than about perception - how easily what we think we know slides from our grasp and into the unknown. This show asks the viewer to linger a while in that delicious hesitation, to relish the quickened, bumping heartbeat that comes when recognition falters.”
