Today we welcome Tom Beck to Warped Space Archives , many thanks for sharing this project.
Tom Beck is a London-based artist working through a photographic framework that expands into sculpture, performance and site-responsive installation. His practice explores the relationship between body, object and architecture, often engaging directly with spaces in states of transition or decline.
The Mute Shall Speak
First presented in 2025, The Mute Shall Speak has also been presented at Photobook Cafe, London, and develops from Beck’s long-term inhabitation of the former Royal Throat Nose and Ear Hospital in King’s Cross, where he lived between 2020–2026 as part of a large-scale guardianship scheme.
The exhibition unfolds through an expanded photographic practice shaped by prolonged presence within the site. Works move between documentation and intervention: temporary sculptures made from found materials, self-reflective image-making, and surface recordings that register the building’s textures and conditions. Series such as The Deaf Shall Hear, Stairwell, and Frottage trace a shift from indexical observation toward more embodied and spatial responses, where architecture and body begin to mirror one another.
Across the project, photography operates as a tool for inhabiting and reimagining space, rather than simply recording it. The work reflects on gentrification, the closure of public sites, and the uncertain futures of buildings caught between use and redevelopment. What emerges is both a record of a lived environment and a subtle act of resistance.
Wide Open (2024)
I thought I would start breaking down my way of making. As AI warps our reading of imagery, I realise I used to get asked "is that photoshopped?" and now "is that AI?"
Na mate. It isn't.
Materiality, play, constraint and error teach me how an image comes into being, rather than how I think it ought to be made.
Wide Open is a photograph made by using a plastic bucket I kept my laundry in suspended from the ceiling by a piece of rope. I then used red coloured backdrop paper behind it to symbolise the inside of a mouth, the bucket being the uvala. Using some tightly flagged flash heads I illuminated the object, creating a sense of inside and outside between the two rooms in front of my lens. The building becomes the body.
Big thanks to @greta_kalva for helping. As the last shot's show, Greta aligned the bucket to be central and to have the desired angle. Many shots later we got there. A labour of love.
Labour.
Could this image be made with AI? Probably yes. Could I get to this outcome with AI. Na mate.

Cycles l and ll, 2023. 20cmx20cm
Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag archival paper and framed with obeche wood made and painted by myself.
This was a fun one to work on. Mimicking a frame that existed in the image prior to a crop, I wanted to add to the trompe l'oeil effect. The print is to scale, the height it was hung is the same as when it was shot. The intent of bringing a rhyme of the hospital to the exhibition space was helped by these details.
Selling as a pair - £550

I will be sharing some details of The Mute Shall Speak solo-show at @photobookcafe last month. Great experience seeing the exhibition as a record of the building and my times of play in the building over the years.

Tom Beck (b.1996) is a London based artist using a photographic framework to encourage the potential for re-imagining the dormant and familiar. A conversance with objects and sites around him act as an anchor to respond to via performative and sculptural interventions. Throughout his work there is a tension between the indexical reading of photography and the other worldly. After graduating from Arts University Bournemouth (2019) with a First Class BA Hons in Photography his work has since been published in SOURCE Magazine and various online publications including It’s Nice That, Intern Mag and EMC’s British Emerging Photographers You Should Know. He has exhibited nationally and most recently had a solo-show The Mute Shall Speak exhibited in Kings Cross (2025).

Have a chuckle, have a vision - Solo show The Mute Shall Speak on from 6th - 8th of March at @photobookcafe gallery. Art work that sits within the photographic language and made within the hospital I lived in for 5 years.
Live performance by sound designer Billy Pleasant from 20:00 - 21:00 who will be responding to the exhibition by using samples from recordings around the hospital and compositions of his own making. Big up @nickclapham who co-composed but sadly can't make it.
Big thanks for @photobookcafe for asking me to put on this show
Thanks @cassiangray who photographed me around the hospital a year back
Big love @officialpaulchuckle - absolute don Phonebook 📞

Frottage, 1, 2 and 3, (2025), graphite on loose canvas, 2 metre x 1 metre.
Created via a montage of graphite rubbings around the hospital. Walls, floor, windows and other surfaces of interest merge together. The process of creating this considers the non-linearity of our memory of areas we think we know. It functions in the same world as the photographic, where we as the viewer are an active participant in creating our own narratives within the frames we are given.
These will be on display at my solo-show The Mute Shall Speak at @photobookcafe from the 6th - 8th March.
