✨We resume our Concert Cycle of all the cantatas in February with a programme that will include cantatas BWV 13, 65 and 83, as well as a work by Brahms: Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen. This is the first time the ensemble is tackling Brahms as part of our Complete Works, and this motet in particular will allow us to assess the composer's attachment to the Lutheran musical heritage. The three Bach cantatas, meanwhile, illustrate how varied the tone of liturgical celebrations could be: two of them are joyful and hopeful, while the third – which gives its name to our programme and whose concert will mark the 300th anniversary of its creation – is one of the most poignant, tragic and tortured that Bach ever composed.

➡️ Selig ist der Mann - BACH
BWV 57 -88- 174
✨The intertwining lights of his genius and faith flood Johann Sebastian Bach's work, as evidenced once again by the three cantatas in this concert. A dialogue between the soul and Jesus, for example, gives rise to one of the most beautiful arias Bach ever wrote in the work that gives our programme its title.
This concert will also highlight Johann Ludwig Bach, the “Bach of Meiningen,” a distant cousin of Johann Sebastian but a major influence on his art, since the latter performed at least 18 of his cousin's cantatas in Leipzig in 1726 alone! It was, among other things, Johann Ludwig's appetite for works that brought together two choirs and two orchestras that certainly gave rise in his cousin's mind to the structure, unprecedented for him, of the St. Matthew Passion.
🎉This sixtieth concert in our Complete Bach Cantatas series will coincide with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Gli Angeli Genève. We are celebrating twenty years of music and concerts, but also twenty years without ever losing sight of this complete cycle, which began in 2005 and continues to be a magical journey along a river of music that, at the rate of three concerts a year, we discover, rediscover, and share with the public. Long live Bach's work!

✨For our final concert this summer, we will travel to Gdansk, in Poland, to present a program designed by our dear friend, Alex Potter: "Treasures from Bach's Library".
Alongside his own compositions, J.S. Bach had a large collection of music by other composers, including members of his own family, ranging from the Renaissance to the most modern music of his time.
The program includes, among other things, Palestrina's « Missa Ecce Sacerdos Magnus », Johann Ludwig Bach's (Bach's cousin!) Missa Brevis super “Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr,” Johann Gottlieb Goldberg's cantata « Durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit », and cantata BWV 2 « Ach Gott vom Himmel sieh darein ».

Salve Regina
✨Taking as our pretext the famous Catholic antiphon and the beautiful and expressive Latin text of its prayer, which has inspired many composers down the ages, our programme, to open the 5th edition of our festival, looks at three of the leading figures in Austrian musical life in the 18th century: Werner, Albrechtsberger and Joseph Haydn, It also includes Mendelssohn's magnificent Salve Regina, in a nod to the closing concert, which will be devoted to his Walpurgisnacht and his concerto for violin and orchestra.

✨ The programme is devoted to previously unpublished gems from this collection, written by Gregor Joseph Werner and Joseph Haydn, the two successive Kapellmeisters at the Esterházy court from 1728 to 1809! We are delighted to welcome György Vashegyi, his Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir, and to mark the start of what we hope will be a long and fruitful collaboration with the Haydneum!

This evening, soprano Nardus Williams and tenor Thomas Hobbs (@thobbstenor ) join Le Banquet Céleste for Handel's sacred drama La Resurrezione. The rarely-heard oratorio retraces the last days of Christ's Passion and features some of Handel's most original music.

BRSO hip

💫 Thomas Hobbs is one of the most interesting and significant Bach tenors of our time and is in high demand with leading baroque and early music ensembles across the world. Highlights of Hobbs’ 2024/25 season include Bach St Matthew Passion with RIAS Kammerchor and the South Netherlands Philharmonic and concerts with ensembles including Le Banquet Celeste, Gli Angeli Genève and Les Arts Florissants, performing works including Bach Cantatas and Handel Messiah and Resurrezione.
❔Name a concert in which Thomas was not our tenor soloist ! 😉
