The Handmaid’s Tale has been my life for nine years 🫠. It has seen me go through dizzying highs and terrifying lows. It has taught me infinite lessons, both personally and creatively. It gave me forever relationships. It exposed my most vulnerable self. Even on the most nerve wracking days, it was pure joy (maybe a few days were impossibly difficult and maybe not the most joyful…sometimes you lose control of fifty background in one scene and it’s awful and the shot doesn’t work because of it, but that’s showbiz, baby). I learned the two most important words from Colin Watkinson - ‘be bold’ - while watching him and Reed bring the most dynamic and exciting and nuanced filmmaking to life in front of my eyes. I had Mike barker, who championed me from the start with his infectious creative spirit and mind, and challenged me each day, making me as strong a collaborator as I could be. Our showrunners, Bruce, Eric, and Yahlin, who are the most supportive and creative partners. And Elisabeth Moss, who has had my back every step of the journey, who I admire SO much, and have learned SO much from, and feel infinitely lucky to have worked with side by side. An actual and literal dream.
To bury the lede, episodes 1, 2, & 3 are now streaming 💁🏻♂️, though you all know that by now. DP’d so very stunningly by Nicola Daley - my rock during prep and whilst filming 💙. Each and every actor in my episode were the most generous, human, raw, and exciting people to work with and, for that, I thank you all.
And a final shout out to the BG Wives, Commanders, Guardians, Marthas, Econopeople…and Handmaids, who spent countless hours with me in the cold/heat/unfriendliest of conditions and still kept their heads down and hands clasped. Otherwise, we would have had to go again.
We’ve been sent good weather. Blessed day.
