Here at ADIA, we believe that Black history and culture should be celebrated all year round! But it's still great to use observations that take place throughout the calendar year as entry points to educate your children about different elements of the African Diaspora. Please like and follow @thisisadia for more tips on how to educate your children about Black history and culture! #artseducation #artsforall #blackhistory #blackculture #blackhomeschooling #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackhomeschoolers #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #africandiaspora

As a follow up to my previous post, I am offering a list of books for grades 6-12 to explore Haitian history and culture in literature. Haiti is just one of many parts of the African Diaspora ADIA plans to explore in our curricula. Stay tuned for updates on our pilot program! #haitianheritagemonth #artseducation #artsforall #blackhistory #blackhomeschooling #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackculture #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #africandiaspora #blackhomeschoolers

Here at ADIA, we value teaching our young people about the African Diaspora so that they understand the resilience and power in our history, as well as what connects people of African descent. Learning about Haiti, its history and culture is no exception. As a Haitian American, everything I learned about Haiti was outside of the classroom. None of my classroom teachers ever referenced the country known as the first free Black republic in the Western Hemisphere. Fortunately we live in a time where resources are growing for children to learn about Haiti! Let's take advantage of those resources, especially during Haitian Heritage Month! #artseducation #artsforall #africandiaspora #blackhistory #blackhomeschooling #blackhistory #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackculture #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #haitianheritagemonth

From ADIA's founder, Maxine Montilus: "As someone who has committed my life to a career in the arts, it breaks my heart to see schools devalue them.... especially since they foster the creativity we say we need for the 21st century workforce. Why short change our children's potential for greatness and their overall development this way? That is why the arts are a key component of ADIA's program...we want to build up our youth's imaginations and capabilities, not limit them." *Source: /2022/03/15/the-arts-deserve-more-funding-in-schools/#:~:text=A%20report%20by%20the%20National,the%20arts%20have%20excelled%20academically #artseducation #artsforall #blackhistory #blackhomeschooling #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackculture #blackhomeschoolers #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #africandiaspora

It is this trend with state legislation towards "anti-CRT" laws that drives us to do the work we do here at ADIA. These are scary times, in which state governments think they can erase history. We encourage families to look for alternatives (such as our program) to enhance their children's education. Our youth deserve to learn the fullness of our history...learning from the past enhance's one sense of identity and provides opportunities to not repeat the mistakes of the past as well. *Source: "States That Have Banned Critical Race Theory 2023", World Population Review: /state-rankings/states-that-have-banned-critical-race-theory #blackhistory #blackhomeschooling #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackculture #blackhomeschoolers #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #artseducation #artsforall #africandiaspora

From ADIA's founder, Maxine Montilus: "Three books that have significantly shaped my approach as an educator are "Pedagogy of the Oppressed " by Paulo Freire and bell hooks' "Teaching to Transgress " and "Teaching Critical Thinking". All three books have inspired me to go beyond just dumping information onto students. I always seek opportunities for young people to engage with material we explore together. As a dance educator, I've experienced first hand how the arts can enhance one's capacity for engagement and critical thinking in the classroom. Information and concepts learned resonate more when one can use their creativity and imagination in the learning process. That's why ADIA uses the arts to teach about Black history and culture." #artseducation #artsforall #homeschooling #homeschoolmom #homeschool #blackhistory #blackhomeschooling #blackculture #blackhomeschoolingfamilies #blackhomeschoolers #africandiaspora

Slide 1: I'll never forget a 7th grade student once told me-in my first year as a public school dance teacher -that they got more history from my dance class than in their humanities course! Slide 2: Those are the moments that remind me of why I've chosen to do the work that I do. Slide 3: Our children want to learn about their history in a way that reflects their culture and identity. It's up to us to provide them with opportunities to do so.
