This is Stijn - and we are bringing him to Art Island!
Stijn Elshuis explores how people relate to history. Is there one story to tell, or is it always subjective? Through his collages and assemblages, he demonstrates that the idea of history is complex and often coloured by our Western perspective. He incorporates insights from history, anthropology, and philosophy into work that broadens our view of the present day.
@artislandamsterdam takes places at Forteiland IJmuiden, 22-24 May 2026. As Special Guests, This Art Fair presents 17 artists in its own section of the art fair. Get your tickets for @artislandamsterdam at art-island.nl
This is Mayra – and we are bringing her to Art Island!
Mayra Sérgio uses materials in unconventional ways, like making bricks out of coffee or turning crushed objects into ink. This results in outcomes that are unstable and continuously challenge expectations. She looks at the tension between beauty and fragility. She’s interested in what happens when materials don’t behave as expected, and how these moments can open up new ways of thinking and meaning.
Mayra is one of 17 artists presenting their own work at the special This Art Fair presentation on @artislandamsterdam 22-24 May. Info & tickets: art-island.nl
This is Clementine – and we are bringing her to Art Island!
Clementine Oomes’ installation reflects the spaces of the internment camps in the former Dutch East Indies where her mother stayed during World War II. The cramped, primitive spaces mirror the historic Forteiland where it is displayed. They carry the emotional legacy of a sad and difficult history, yet simultaneously create a sense of safety and security. The work represents a resilience that is still often needed to survive in the present day.
Discover how the work of Clementine and 16 other artists responds to the unique location of @artislandamsterdam from May 22 to 24. Info & tickets: art-island.nl
This is Henk – and we are bringing him to Art Island!
Henk Schut explores the relationship between sound, space, and time. How does what we hear influence our experience of our surroundings? In a new installation he is creating especially for Art Island, Henk imagines the sounds of the island in the future, influenced by changed circumstances in the world. He also offers a glimpse behind the scenes of his process by showing his studies (drawings on paper).
Henk is one of the 17 artists whose work we are showing at Art Island. Take the boat to Forteiland IJmuiden on May 22, 23, or 24. Buy your ticket first at art-island.nl
This is Tara-Eva – and we are bringing her to Art Island!
Through her fictional creatures, Tara-Eva Kuijpers Wentink connects human anatomy with the world of plants, microorganisms and fungi. At Art Island, she presents sculptures and drawings inspired by mycorrhiza: the underground network of fungal roots that enables communication between plants and trees. With this, Tara-Eva invites us to view the world as something that extends beyond our sensory perception.
This Art Fair presents the art of 17 former participants in our own section of @artislandamsterdam from 22 until 24 May. Get your tickets on art-island.nl
This is Youri – and we are bringing him to Art Island!
By applying, removing and covering over pictorial forms, Youri Alvites refers to a place forever in motion. On the one hand, he searches for solitude and nature, stemming from digging up soil in the garden as a child. On the other, he flirts with big city life, flashy streets and endless bars. These contrasting elements together create an imaginative universe, where mistakes and coincidences are embraced.
Youri is presenting his own art at @artislandamsterdam together with 16 other former This Art Fair participants. Take the boat to Forteiland IJmuiden on 22, 23 or 24 May and discover their latest work! Info & tickets: art-island.nl
This is idv.iris – and we are bringing her to Art Island!
idv.iris (Iris de Vries) makes her work accessible by inviting you not only to look at it, but also to touch it. By bringing together much of the same, she transforms something recognisable into something alienating. She plays with the idea of efficiency and how our attempts at it inevitably fail.
Take the boat to Forteiland IJmuiden with us and visit @artislandamsterdam on 22, 23 or 24 May. This Art Fair creates a special presentation of 17 artists. Info & tickets: art-island.nl
This is Khattar – and we are bringing him to Art Island!
Khattar Shaheen's paintings and charcoal animations stem from his own experiences and the broader context of conflict. The bodies he depicts are often fragmented, compressed, or unstable, through which he expresses physical and mental tension. The palpable isolation and distance are amplified by the dark spaces of the fort on the remote island.
Khattar is one of the 17 artists whose work we are showing at @artislandamsterdam . This adventurous art fair takes place at Forteiland IJmuiden from May 22 to 24. You can find more information at art-island.nl
This is Nynke – and we are bringing her to Art Island!
Nynke Deinema examines the colonial past and the (in)visibility of women in the arts. She does this through her own version of Iconoclasm: by scratching, cutting and perforating photographic materials. These photos carry a complicated history, and by manipulating them, Nynke creates space for new meaning.
This Art Fair takes 17 former participants to a special presentation at Art Island, from 22 until 24 May at Forteiland IJmuiden. More info and tickets at art-island.nl
This is Qiao Chu Guo – and we are bringing them to Art Island!
Qiao Chu Guo expresses resilience through artworks about their family’s history. Their land was flooded during the construction of a reservoir, causing environmental damage and illness. The artist expresses how their family survived these conditions through stilt-walking - used to move through toxic wetlands - and by transforming calabashes (water containers) into instruments.
This Art Fair are Special Guests at Art Island, from 22 until 24 May at the extraordinary Forteiland IJmuiden. Get your tickets at art-island.nl
