I've never gotten fully into stream-of-consciousness writing or psychedelic drugs to influence creativity. I've never delved into that stuff. If I were to sit down and think of something quickly, that seems to get closer to my heart without my brain getting in the way and ruining it.

In my family, hair care has always been more than a routine. It was art, health, healing, conversation, ritual. I wrote my short story, "The Beautifulest (Or, Peace To All Who Enter)" in my collection MOJORHYTHM, because I wanted to see what happens when the tradition of a Memphis beauty salon meets the ancient study of African fractals and spiritual roots like Isese, Hoodoo, and Kemet, Numbers 6, Judges 13-16. I imagined a liminal space in Memphis where a braid is actually a potential energy pathway that shapes fates.
It’s a sanctuary for the skillful "Kitchen Queens" who resurrect edges and spirit alike. But even in a peaceful sanctuary, a broken truce can lead to a thousand-year war.
What are your favorite hairstyles? I love the beautiful hair braid sculptures of @faiththedesigner and @laetitiaky . Have you seen the art of Joanne Petit-Frère? What's a tradition in your family or community that feels low-key like a quiet kind of magic?
