🌲❤️ Introducing the Knobcone Pine: ❤️🌲
🌲 The Knobcone Pine, or Pinus attenuata, is a tree that grows in mild climates on dry, rocky soils & produces these lovely cones.
🌲 These trees are native to the Santa Cruz mountain region, although they can grow all the way from Baja, California up to southern Oregon.
🌲 You can identify this pine by its unique clusters of knobby cones. They adhere to limbs in clusters, gripping the tree so tightly that they sometimes become embedded as the tree grows around them.
🌲 The Knobcone Pine is known for producing the hardest & most dense Pinecones in the world.
🌲 The cones are a serotinous species of Pinecone, meaning that they may remain unopened on the tree for years and only burst open & reproduce during a forest fire.
🌲 The heat will boil the sap inside of the cone, causing it to expand and literally "pop" open like a little grenade, shooting their seeds out up to 50 feet away.
