This is Roshaun Stephenson MFA Photography + Media & Society thesis exhibition at Maryland Institute College of Art featuring: The development of aynoS Records, a community-centered archival project focused on women and children impacted by incarceration. The project centers personal writing and creative storytelling from participants—including my mother, who is currently incarcerated—as primary sources. Rather than positioning incarcerated people as subjects, I’m working to establish them as co-authors whose lived experience challenges how carceral systems reduce lives to documentation.

Expanding photography beyond the camera, the works on view engage material experimentation, installation, and socially engaged approaches.
From investigations of gun violence and metabolic disease to the prison industrial complex and questions of cultural identity, each project connects personal experience to broader social and political realities.
Celebrate the Class of 2026 as we present work that challenges, connects, and reimagines the role of image-making today.

Occupy space.
Remain still.
The conditions are irrelevant.
Noise does not interrupt presence.
Cold does not displace focus.
Solitude is not withdrawal but a deliberate position that creates the distance needed to see clearly, think honestly, and remain intact within oneself.

How do you define fear?
Is it danger or the awareness of your own limits?
In this frame is she afraid of the birds or is her body’s response revealing something without permission?
Fear is more than a feeling. It’s a lens and a teacher that reveals the parts of you still waiting to be understood. Knowing the difference between fear and danger. One protects you while the other prevents you❕
