We’re almost at 5000 followers and we’re pinching ourselves that we’ve managed to drag in this many people to our incessant chat about tax and economic reform! We figure it’s time for a little re-introduction. This is 1/3 posts that we’ll be sharing to do just that in the lead up to our next big move 💪

Did you know that you might pay more tax than your landlord, multi-millionaires or even entire corporations? That’s because our tax system rewards the wrong things: wealth accumulation, rent seeking and speculation. It’s why we are calling on our political leaders to act and give younger generations their shot at economic security, and so we can invest in the things that matter. We’ll be delivering an Open Letter to the new parliament. You can sign it using the link in our bio. We know there are good reasons to ignore tax reform. It sounds a bit dull, and honestly, we have so much on our plates already. But it's really important, and there are big benefits from us working together to advocate for change. 👏

We we’re told that tax reform to capital gains and negative gearing would never happen. Well, here we are! It’s not perfect but the shift in direction should be acknowledged. We’ll be unpacking policy shifts over the coming weeks (after we have a nap or two) and a chance to really analyse and sit with what the changes mean!

Young Australians need more than a good budget. They need housing they can afford. Financial education they can actually access. Systems that do not leave them behind. And a real say in the decisions shaping their future. In WhyNot’s latest piece, @lvcy.jpeg explores what the Federal Budget means for young people, and why financial literacy, tax reform and youth participation all matter when we talk about a fair go. Lucy sat down with Kate from @moneybites and Jane from @thinkforward_aus to unpack what needs to change, and why young people must be part of the economic conversations shaping their future. A big thank you to Kate and Jane, for sharing their insight and work with us. Because young people do not just need to be taught how to survive the economy. They need to be included in shaping it. Many of the policies up for reform in tomorrow’s budget were introduced to provide some kind of benefit across society, but without long-term thinking, their real-world impact has come to outweigh the benefits they were designed to deliver. It’s time to fix them. Let’s unpack them so you’re across the detail when the budget lands tomorrow.

Opposition to tax reform for intergenerational equity in the budget has stepped up a notch. Let’s take a look at what’s legit, or just scare-mongering. #taxwealthnotwork

A growing chorus of speculators and rent-seekers are saying that tax reform in next week’s budget will be TERRIBLE for young people, because we'll miss out on tax breaks to build wealth ourselves. But really, the CGT discount overwhelmingly benefits the already wealthy, even if a few crumbs do fall down to some of us. This exact conversation is why we've launched Tax Match before the budget, so people can see the true costs and trade-offs. Give it a go at the link in our bio!
