ATROPOS [Zodiak - Centre for New Dance, 2025]
ATROPOS, by Lydia Touliatou, embarks on a profound exploration of the connections between death and migration through the rich tapestry of Greek mythology, a fusion of Bharatanatyam and contemporary choreographic methods, and the lived experience of a female migrant artist.
The choreography investigates death as another form of migration and migration as a form of death. The dancer’s body becomes the meeting point between cultures, where threads of longing, memories, and grievances are spun into a powerful expression of our shared humanity.
Structurally, ATROPOS serves as a dialogue between different cultures, practices, and temporalities. The movement language of the piece derives from the narrative principles of Bharatanatyam. The storytelling tools of mudras (hand gestures) and abhinaya (facial expressions) form the foundation of a new kinetic vocabulary that Touliatou is developing as a contemporary dance artist, distilled through her dual training and embodiment of both Eastern and Western choreographic methods.

Nurjaton [Museo Eliel - Joensuu, 2025]
Nurjaton is an interactive installation that reimagines the Karelian tradition of the käspaikka. Käspaikka is a long, woven or embroidered ritual cloth once used in ceremonies and given as a gesture of blessing. Over centuries, the käspaikka has evolved, yet its symbols, colors, and visual language remain distinct. Ekho Collective brings a contemporary, responsive interpretation: Nurjaton embroiders and unravels through audience interaction, turning tradition into a living, multisensory experience.
The soundscape dynamically weaves together nature sounds, drones, synthesizers and experimentally sampled Karelian instruments. In it’s heart is a Max/MSP patch that aleatorically mixes different elements and reacts to the visitors moving in space.

Avaruuden Nurkka // A Corner in the Space [Viirus Guest, 2025]
Drawing inspiration from video game aesthetics and social media, Avaruuden nurkka dissects modern power structures. Through an episodic narrative, Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) go on a quest for agency.
Amidst crashing floods, sensory overload from ads, and the breakneck speed of evolving trends, the line between player and NPC blurs. Are we in control of our own lives? Who is writing our code—and is the game even winnable?

Are jeans the color of jeans or blue? After typing the word jeans couple of times in succession, I’m not sure if it’s even spelled right. It’s nice to draw pointless animations to calm down. And there’s plucks synced to the doodles.

One of the reasons I like working in the independent performing arts scene is that a great deal of innovation comes from there, emerging from research on the thresholds.
Maybe our recent work with dancer-choreographer Lydia Touliatou will be considered as an example of this, as it merges the language of classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam, with contemporary movement, thus allowing a new dance vocabulary to emerge. The piece, ATROPOS, evoking ancient Greek mythology, talks about the experience of a migrant woman.
It's been a remarkable journey with Lydia and the team, including sound artist Timo Tikka, filmmaker Joona Mäkelä, costume designer Hilla Ruuska, set designer Mikko Salminen, and lighting designer Saana Hannonen, developing this new contemporary dance performance in collaboration.
ATROPOS will premiere on 23 September at 7 pm at Zodiak – Uuden tanssin keskus / Center for New Dance, and we are curious to see how the threads of our story will resonate with you.
Before the premiere, our cultural adviser, Gayathri Menon, will lead a workshop on Bharatanatyam. More information and booking: https://www.zodiak.fi/en/programme/atropos (Photography: Joona Mäkelä, editing and graphic design: Mikko Salminen)
Echoing differently [music / animation 2025]
I feel like I suck at making dance music if I veer away from ambient or glitch stuff. Maybe it’s about the more apparent affective qualities of chord progressions that have perhaps been reified in our collective minds to represent something naive and less-than-art that make scared and self conscious? This song started out as a joke - a remix of a royalty free bgm - but took some turns and started to mirror and echo something from inside me. The visuals are differential growth algorithms and greatly inspired by a blender tutorial by @seanterelle3d
