Did You Know: Yvette Lee Bowser’s real life has been the foundation of our favorite shows?!🤯🤩
As a recent college graduate in 1987, Bowser took a leap of faith and reached out to Stu Gardner, a family friend who worked on “The Cosby Show”. From there she boldly left her well-made, USC law-school plans to take an unpaid writing job on a new show called “A Different World”. Drawing on her recent college experience, and the love, life, and friendships of a young African-American, Bowser and the dedicated ADW team turned that spinoff sitcom into a massive and beloved success.
After five seasons Bowser stepped out on faith again, creating a show about her life and lives of her girlfriends with music and tv stars, Queen Latifah and Kim Coles. She later sought after Kim Fields and fought the networks to keep Max a.k.a. Erika Alexander. Her creative baby became an instant hit and remains a hugely popular, memorable, relatable cultural staple to this day.
Bowser continued to pour her life’s journal (and the journals of others😄) onto the pages and characters of shows like “For Your Love”, “Half & Half”, “Black-ish” and more.
Yvette Lee Bowser has continued to leave an indelible mark on an industry that hasn’t always known how to highlight the diversity of African-American life. But thanks to Bowser, she continues to leave a blueprint for young creatives, and Hollywood, on how to tell the stories that we look to and long for.
“We’re not a monolith. We’re not always angry, sassy or uneducated. We have many, many shadings, and not just in our skin tone. We deserve to be heard and seen.” - Yvette Lee Bowser ♥️
Thank you Yvette for allowing your stories to become our own.🤎😌💐
