Our 2025 Larson Grant Recipients are:

For The Classical Theatre of Harlem (@classicalharlem ), there is nothing more important than the vibrant connection between community and theatre. Founded in 1999, CTH brings the classics directly into the heart of today’s Harlem, uplifting local voices and showcasing the transformative power of heightened language. With their Summer Uptown Shakespeare in the Park, every performance is free, and every person is welcome. The diversity on their stage is a direct reflection of their audience, proving that the stories they tell—no matter how old—belong to everyone.
In this episode, we follow CTH for their summer 2025 production of Memnon, a new take on a once-obscure Greek tragedy. “Have you ever noticed how most Asian Americans are slightly brain- damaged from having grown up with Asian parents?” begins the Korean American protagonist of Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven, the singular work by Young Jean Lee. This is the first collection by the downtown writer-director, whose explorations of stereotypes of race, gender, and religion are unflinching and seat-squirming funny.

Freddie is a middle school theatre teacher at Utopian Academy for the Arts in Ellenwood, Ga. and the 10th theatre arts teacher to receive the award. He has been an arts educator for more than 30 years and was an honorable mention for the EITEA in 2023 and 2024. 🎉
