A low flat tongue causes more problems than is often recognised. It inhibits free movement of the larynx which is essential for ease of access to range. It fosters tongue root tension which impacts vocal function causing an unnecessary and detrimental increase in effort. And while it may seem counterintuitive, a low flat tongue is the opposite of what is needed for effective projection. Maintaining an /i/ (-ee as in ‘see’) for all vowels is a much more acoustically efficient position, as the old bel canto teachers knew!
It may take some practice to retrain the tongue to be comfortable with a relaxed mid to high position but it makes an enormous difference to effort levels, projection and intelligibility.
