Public transportation in Namibia is not that convenient for travellers. To move between towns locals are using small buses, which do many stops gathering people on their way and are said to be involved often in road accidents.
That doesn't leave us with much options.
Some tourists rent a car with a driver, but this is far away from being a budget option, especially if you are there for longer period. Weirdly enough the best budget option is to rent a car and drive it yourself! And oh boy, for a long trip through the endless horizons you don't have much choice. You need something big, like big big, like Toyota Hilux big. To cut some accommodation costs gotta get one with a rooftop tent and camping gear.
Lucky you! Turns out Namibia is one of the best countries for a road trip!

🐎🏜️ The Namib Desert Horses 🐴 the only feral herd of horses residing in Africa.
📍Aus, Namibia
You can easily spot them while driving between Luderitz and Aus or if you go to the borehole in the Garub area, close to Aus.
🔫 In 1915, during the First World War and the combat against the German Schutztruppe, about 10,000 South African soldiers with 6,000 horses were stationed at Garub, Namibia. A German air force lieutenant was able to drop a bomb into the enemy’s camp, and about 1700 of the surviving horses fled into the desert.
⬇️ Today there are only between 90 and 150 wild horses left.
💎 Two main factors have favored the survival of the horses. With the discovery of the first diamond in the area in 1908 and the establishment of the huge Restricted Diamond Areas, the area of Garub where the majority of the feral horses stayed became restricted to everybody, including hunters and horse traders. Thus the feral horses had 80 years time to adapt to the harsh environment and to live undisturbed.

Cape ground squirrel is definitely my favorite animal in Africa. They live in holes in the ground and love munching on grasshoppers and other insects. Many of them are not scared of humans and are super cute, I mean c'mon, just look at them.

🛩️The seasonal Planegazing of @_ali.amigh_ at @twenteairportofficial
Planegazing is the art of following silver wings across the sky, where planes and gliders weave through clouds like whispered dreams. In that silent drift, earth and sky dissolve, and the soul soars weightless, carried on the wind’s gentle dance (shall not be mistaken with "plane glazing").
🛫 Gliders pulled by a truck are launched using a tow rope, which the truck pulls along the ground until the glider lifts off. At the desired altitude, the pilot releases the rope, which falls safely to the ground, allowing the glider to soar freely on thermals and air currents before landing.

🐧The African Penguin 🐧
⛱️ Boulders Beach is home to African penguins—the only penguin species native to the continent.
👩👩👦👦 The colony began in 1982 when two breeding pairs settled between the boulders—now it has grown to over 2,000 birds!
🏜️ Unlike their Antarctic cousins, African penguins live in temperate climates. They don't need snow and ice - just shade, sand, and cool water.
🐾 These penguins have become accustomed to humans. They sometimes wander into residential areas, and some even nest under cars or in gardens.
👮 Each African penguin has a unique pattern of black spots on its chest, kind of like a fingerprint!

🦅 Over 700 bird species have been recorded in Namibia
🐦 Birds can be found from the dry Namib Desert to the lush wetlands of the Zambezi Region.
🌍 Namibia is part of the African-Eurasian Flyway, making it an important stopover for migratory birds from Europe and Asia.
📅 Birdwatching is great year-round, but the best time to see migratory species is from November to April.

🐔 South Africa is home to an incredibly diverse array of bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. With over 850 recorded species, the country offers a mix of endemic, migratory, and resident birds that thrive in its varied ecosystems - from lush forests and wetlands to arid savannas and coastal cliffs.
Flamingos aren’t born pink! Their pink coloration comes from carotenoids in the algae, crustaceans, and plankton they eat. 🐓

🦔 Dassie (aka rock hyrax) is Africa’s most underrated diva. Those chunky little furballs sunbathing on rocks are actually related to elephants.
👨👩👧👦 They live in big social squads, post up on cliffs with a view, and scream alarms when danger comes close
🥦 Despite their size, they’ve got mad climbing skills, eat like vegan goats - grass, bark, leaves, fruits
☀️ Their hobbies are Sunbathing, squeaking in weird little songs, and being adorable.
👑 Basically a guinea pig with attitude and a royal bloodline.
🥔 However, I prefer to call them screaming potatoes.
