LIBERATED WOMAN begins April 11th ✨ What Lilith Can Teach Us About Masculinity, Men and Love: I recently saw a poem that spoke about how women will never surrender to a man who is unsafe, tyrannical or controlling.... That a woman will only surrender to the “masculine” who honors her. And in this mystical surrender she finally blooms into her feminine essence. Such messages sound healing, as if they are addressing centuries of misogyny. But benevolent patriarchy does not heal or resolve misogyny. It perpetuates it. I don’t think women are often aware of how they dehumanize and objectify men through the myth of masculinity as dominance and the fantasy of the perfect benevolent patriarch. In the projection of the Daddy-God, men cease to be human beings. They are valued for their performance of dominance. We define masculinity and femininity archetypally as “adult-like” and “child-like”. It colors every aspect of our language. Patriarchy means “the rule of the father” and patriarchal romance is the romance between an archetypal father and daughter. In the fantasy that the perfect holding, protection and attunement of a man will cause her to blossom, woman feeds the inverted myth of Eve who was born out of man’s body. His Desire defines her. She knows herself as his desired object. She wants to be claimed by it. She recognizes this feeling as “love”. The myth of masculinity as dominance is inextricable with misogyny. You cannot have one without the other. Benevolent patriarchy cannot heal women. Dominator masculinity will never be our salvation. Liberation requires us to leave the garden and the spell that’s been woven here. It begins when we eat the forbidden fruit and awaken from the Daddy-God delusion. Lilith shows us that her refusal to lie beneath Adam was never an act of rebellion. It was her allegiance to something organic. It was born of her desire for truth. Outside the gates of eden there must be something that exists that is worthy of bearing the name we call love.

But I love to look to the Crone archtype and ask: How does she see romance? I like to imagine myself in 40 years and see my life through her eyes. What would she have to say about my love life? What does she know about the choices I’ve made? Does she have regrets? What are they? The younger, maiden version of myself was so naive when it came to romance. So willing to self abandon for love. So willing to place romance with men at the center of my life. As I have grown into a mature woman, and now a liberated woman- I see men, sx and love so differently. Being true to myself is so much sweeter than any fantasy of romance ever touched. My commitment has shifted dramatically towards the values and passions that I know my life is in devotion to. Romance get’s to be a sweet cherry on the sundae of my life. Not my reason for living. And I wonder… what does the future me- The Crone know? So many women do not wake up from the dream of patriarchal romance until they cross the developmental threshold into elderhood. I am grateful I got a head start. I find it wildly exciting to imagine just how radically authentic and liberated The Crone in me is. I can sometimes hear her cackling at the stories we tell ourselves about men and love.
