934km. 16,000m of climbing. 4 days fighting wind, cold and myself. At the end of March, I rode my first unsupported ultracycling race: The Unknown Race in Spain. The concept is simple: You only know the start and finish. The actual route gets revealed checkpoint by checkpoint during the race. At 22 years old, I was the youngest participant. And honestly: I wasn’t perfectly prepared. Not enough warm clothes, underestimated the weather and on top of that, this year was the “Windy Edition”. Not normal wind. The kind of wind where you have to hold onto your bike just to stay upright. Somewhere during the race I also crashed and damaged my frame near the rear axle. Still, I managed to finish one day before the cut-off. And that’s what this race was really about for me: Learning. Experience. Finding out how far I can actually push myself. With better preparation, a lot more would’ve been possible. But maybe that’s exactly why this race was so important. The Unknown -3 Ich wache gegen 8:30 Uhr auf. Beine fühlen sich… naja, „benutzt“ an 😅 Vielleicht ist so eine lange Pause bei einem Ultra doch nicht die beste Idee. Hilft nix. Aufstehen. Ich stehe um 8:55 Uhr vor dem Radladen… geschlossen. Immerhin habe ich noch nicht gefrühstückt. Ich sehe ein Hotel, linse rein → riesiges Buffet. Also rein mit dem Rad, kurzer Check an der Rezeption: „Kann ich hier frühstücken?“ → 13 €, Deal. Eine Stunde: Kaffee, O-Saft, Ei, Kuchen, alles. Ich sitze da und genieße. Dann kommt ein anderer Fahrer rein – Fabi. Fährt auch das Unknown. Wir frühstücken zusammen, als würden wir uns schon ewig kennen. Schon irgendwie cool. Zweiter Versuch Radladen - jetzt offen -und was für einer: Bikepacking, Gravel & Yoga Ich werde herzlich empfangen, mein Schaltauge bekommt „viel Love“. → fühlt sich an wie ein neues Rad. Kaum aus der Stadt raus geht es in den Anstieg und plötzlich sind die Beine wieder da. Fast wie an Tag 1. Schon verrückt, was eine Nacht Schlaf ausmacht. Ich denke mir (im Hinblick auf das Three Peaks) Vielleicht ist das gar nicht so dumm: alle zwei Nächte richtig schlafen… Aber auch der andere Gedanke: Ich habe viel Zeit verloren. Ist halt so. Ich fahre Richtung CP4. Landschaft wird rauer, höher, windiger. Kleines Learning: Bar → Cortado → „Lavare“ → Toilette (Tampon wechseln) → Eis → bezahlen → weiter → funktioniert effizient 🙃 Je höher ich komme, desto mehr Wind. Auf einem Plateau dann komplett offen. Böen von der Seite, ich muss richtig gegenlenken. Dann erwischt mich eine Böhe - liege. Schon wieder. Schaltauge wieder leicht verbogen - aber fahrbar. Irgendwann bin ich oben - es ist einfach nur schön. Leichte Abfahrt, gute Straße, Berge. Gegen Abend CP5. Oben auf einer Plattform, Sonnenuntergang -richtig schön. Aber: Wind und kalt. Keine Lust mehr auf draußen schlafen. Buche ein Hotel ~70 km entfernt. Sofort ist der Kopf ruhig. Die Nachtfahrt dahin: leicht bergab, Vollmond, Sterne, kaum Verkehr. Einer dieser Momente, wo einfach alles passt. Gegen 23 Uhr komme ich an - Essen gibt es auch noch - Gute Nacht. 📸 @saskiacmartin & @doma.grunt

The Unknown – Teil 1 Kaum geschlafen, nichts gefrühstückt (dafür den Airbnb-Schlüssel gesucht 🙃) → perfekte Bedingungen für ein Ultra Dazu Krämpfe – Periode kündigt sich an. Start neutralisiert, dann geht’s los. Alle fahren vorbei – ich bleibe bei meinem Tempo. Das Rennen entscheidet sich nicht am ersten Berg. Sonne, Wärme, schöne Landschaft – die ganze Anspannung fällt ab. Nur ich und mein Rad. Ich bin einfach glücklich. CP1: alle planen ihre Route ich sitze da und warte auf meinen Garmin der die Route nicht laden möchte. → weiter mit Komoot - auf den Kopfhörern Fehler: nur noch eine halbe Flasche Wasser und keinen Nerv, nochmal ins Dorf zurückzufahren abzubiegen. Was folgt: ewig lange Gerade, Gegenwind, nichts. → „Ist halt so.“ Irgendwann kommt Abends die Tankstelle: Cola, Wasser, Baguette, Käse, Eis, Kekse. Weiter in die Nacht. Kalt, müde, kein Schlafplatz. Gegen 3 Uhr muss es halt der Olivenhain, Schlafsack, Wind von der Seite erst mit Notfalldecke wird’s halbwegs warm → ein bisschen Schlaf 6 Uhr: wach, muss raus, aber es ist zu kalt liege noch eine Stunde im Schlafsack und hadere mit mir → das nervt mich mehr als alles andere Frühstück dann am Truckstop: Tortilla, Kaffee, Croissants - noch mehr Zeit verloren aber → Welt wieder in Ordnung 📸 @doma.grunt 📸 @saskiacmartin

Well well, pictures from @theunknown_race just dropped (and seriously, what hell of shots are these, @doma.grunt @saskiacmartin @theklund1 ?! 🤯) so yeah… time for a slightly sentimental post. After two DNFs in the past years, I’d almost convinced myself to quit this ultracycling thing: “go back to dotwatching, racing’s not for you.” And then… registrations opened, and I signed up straight away 😅 Because, as @jbobbink put it perfectly: the real win is being at the start line of a race like this. And he’s right. This year the difference was simple: enjoying ALL of the journey. Not just race days, but everything around it—cold winter rides, fog, night training… made way better by sharing it with two solid friends like @mrcdidio e @mrn_sbstn . So yeah, a circle closed…but at the start line, not the finish! That was just the cherry on top. And finally, biggest thanks to @clarabocchio and Nina, for the constant support in this obsession of mine that I can’t really give up… even when it clashes with real life.

While the first riders have already crossed the line, the race is still going on further back in the field. At Checkpoint 3A, riders were still coming and going in the early morning.
