🤓DID YOU KNOW?: Children between the ages of 0-6 have a God-given ability to pick up, store and apply information from their environment rapidly, effortlessly and without being formally taught. This is known as “the absorbent mind theory”. It explains how I once had a child in my classroom who could speak fluent French, Chinese-Mandarin, English and a little bit of German at the tender age of 4! Our educators’ plea to you on this special day is to take advantage of this magical period of rapid, spontaneous learning in your toddler’s life and speak to them regularly in your indigenous languages. (Note they can learn more than 1 at once.) This not only offers intellectual advantages, but infuses a strong sense of identity that enhances self-esteem and cultural pride. Of the things to be proud of in our dear country Nigeria, our rich cultural heritage is definitely one of them. Here’s wishing you a great journey to developing cultural pride in your children through language. One of the beauties of the Montessori method is that it is not bound by our perceptions of what a child should be doing per age. It meets the child at their own specific developmental need and takes them systematically from there to as far as they are able or willing to go regardless of age. So yes you could have a 4 or 5 year old learning complex multiplication operations, even with changing (dynamic multiplication). And we just love that!
