A creature feature about a rabid chimpanzee released in January has no business being THIS good.
After returning home to Hawaii for summer break, Lucy reunites with her father, her sister and their beloved pet chimpanzee, Ben. When her father leaves for work, Lucy and her friends are ready to have fun and take advantage of the empty house they’ve been left in but, unbeknownst to them, their beloved chimpanzee Ben has been bitten by a wild animal and infected with rabies, sending their idyllic summer vacation into pure, terrifying chaos.
I was lucky enough to catch an advanced screening of PRIMATE last week and to say it exceeded my expectations would be an understatement.
PRIMATE could have just lent all the way into trashy b-movie territory and been a decent enough horror movie, and while there are certainly elements of that, there are also moments of genuine, nerve-shredding suspense while simultaneously being super nasty, mean spirited and grotesque with pockets of shocking and explosive gore, including one particular kill that may go down as one of the best horror deaths of 2026.
It looks great, it’s well shot, the performances are all solid and the practical effects are genuinely incredible. There’s very little CGI in this movie. Ben is a practical creation — an actor in a chimpanzee suit with an animatronic chimpanzee head and it works unbelievably well and looks extremely realistic, adding authenticity to the horrifying things we are seeing unfold. And as if all that wasn’t enough, there’s even a solid emotional core about an already grieving family having to deal with the fact their beloved pet, a member of the family in his own right, through no fault of his own has become a violent savage. It’s kind of heartbreaking.
PRIMATE feels like a classic, old school creature feature; the kind of thing that would have come out in the 80s or 90s and ended up with a huge cult following and I loved every second of it. It is one hell of a ride and perhaps one of the best January horror releases ever?
Stop monkeying around and go see it when it hits UK cinemas on January 30.

REBIRTH is the JURASSIC PARK 3 of the JURASSIC WORLD movies — the fun, brainless, action packed sequel that is perfectly content with being nothing more than simple popcorn entertainment and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
It certainly isn’t in the upper echelon of this franchise but it also isn’t the worst. The set pieces are fantastic, perhaps even up there with some of the better in the franchise, but the screenplay around those set pieces feels very hollow, so it’s difficult to care about anything that’s happening.
The CGI is pretty incredible for the most part but that doesn’t change how much I desperately wished there were animatronics in here somewhere. I fully understand that general audiences probably couldn’t care less, but as a fan of this franchise, I think the world class animatronics were always an integral part of what made these movies so special and it breaks my heart that the JW movies specifically have distanced themselves from animatronics in favour of CGI. No matter how high of a standard the CGI is at, you simply can’t beat a real, tangible thing actually being there on screen with the actors.
I don’t want to get too “spoilery” but another major disappointment for me was the lack of Velociraptors. The fact you only see them in the background for like five seconds is blasphemous. They’re a cornerstone of this series.
I didn’t hate the “D-Rex” as much as I thought I would. It’s far better in action than it was in previously released pictures or toys and there are some fantastic shots of it when it first appears, but I can’t say I’m a big fan of all of these hybrids the JW movies have given us. To steal a quote from the first Jurassic World — “they’re dinosaurs…wow enough.” These movies are now closer to being straight up MONSTER movies as opposed to being DINOSAUR movies and that isn’t really what I want from this franchise, personally. Dinosaurs are wow enough. Hey, @universalpictures — I have a handful of fantastic ideas for JURASSIC movies that would take it back to its roots and wouldn’t cost $200m+. Hit me up. Let’s talk.
JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH is good, simple fun. Nothing more, nothing less. A solid 3.5/5
I caught an advanced screening of DANGEROUS ANIMALS on Monday and if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a total slut for shark movies. Even the bad ones are usually entertaining. Thankfully, this is a good one.
A hybrid between a shark movie and a serial killer thriller about a psychopath who feeds his victims to sharks and videos them for his own entertainment? If that brief synopsis doesn’t sell you on this film, nothing will.
The very underrated Jai Courtney is delightfully unhinged here as Tucker, combining that rugged Aussie charm with complete deranged lunacy, resulting in a wildly entertaining and unnerving performance. Hassie Harrison, an actor I was wholly unfamiliar with before this, is also great as Zephyr — Tucker’s latest victim who turns out to be far tougher and more resilient than he was anticipating.
There’s some very shaky dialogue throughout, including a “one-liner” so corny it made me want to throw my drink at the screen. I was kind of baffled how it not only remained in the final draft of the script, but actually made it to the screen. It drew a lot of laughter from my audience, but I’m pretty sure we were all laughing AT it, not WITH it.
Iffy dialogue aside, DANGEROUS ANIMALS is a fast-paced, no-nonsense, entertaining little movie that zips along its brisk 98-minute runtime very nicely.

Following something as overwhelmingly bleak as LONGLEGS with a whacky, zany, ultra-gory, absurdist horror-comedy is kind of a gangster move from Osgood Perkins.
Hot on the heels of delivering one of the buzziest horror movies in years, it would have been so easy for Perkins to stay in that lane, but he has instead given us something that is so far removed from LONGLEGS tonally that it’s hard to believe it’s from the same guy.
I enjoyed LONGLEGS, but I don’t think it’s quite the masterpiece some believe it to be and I don’t think it has much rewatch value, meaning I’ll probably ever watch it again. Whereas I can see myself rewatching THE MONKEY quite a bit in the future. It dives in head first, zips along at a nice pace, is consistently funny and packed with over the top, hyper-violent kills. Theo James is fantastic here, too. I skimmed his filmography and it turns out, I’ve never really seen him in anything before. I guess the projects he’s chosen up until now have never really appealed to me, so this is kind of my first real exposure to him and he delivers a delightfully awkward performance. Oh and the monkey itself is deliciously creepy.
This may be a controversial opinion but I think THE MONKEY may be my favourite movie from Osgood Perkins so far.
Oh and just a heads up (because I myself missed it) there is a teaser trailer for Perkins’ next horror movie KEEPER after the credits if you fancy staying for it.

What do you get when you take a corny Hallmark romcom and drop a masked serial killer in it? You get HEART EYES!
This movie was not what I was expecting it to be, in the best possible way. It’s consistently laugh-out-loud funny, it’s corny as hell and brutal as fuck. This is a slasher movie for people who love The Notebook and therefore is the perfect movie to see with your significant on your Valentine’s Day date night.
The killer looks great with a unique mask with glowing heart eyes (which I wish were utilised a little more than they were), there’s a handful of memorable kills and the cast are a lot of fun — Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding in particular are absolutely delightful as our two loved up leads caught in a nightmare. Their chemistry is off the charts and they light up the screen whenever they’re together.
I have a few minor gripes, but it’s nothing too serious. It’s a little bit predictable, for one. And, as with a lot of these type of “whodunnit” slasher movies, the final “big reveal” is underwhelming and falls a little flat. The build up to the reveal is far better than the reveal itself. It’s exactly how I feel about Scream 5 and Scream 6 — my least favourite part of both movies is the big reveal at the end, as both sets of killers in those two movies are the worst in the franchise, in my opinion. And I kind of got that same “oh, that’s it?” feeling watching HEART EYES. It all gets very silly and convoluted towards the end but it remains very entertaining, regardless. And, considering this isn’t a straight-up horror movie and dances the line between horror and romcom, the silliness of the finale doesn’t feel as out of place as it does in other movies of this ilk.
If you’re expecting a full blown horror movie, this isn’t that, so adjust your expectations. This is a cheesy romantic movie that also just happens to have a masked serial killer running around laying waste to couples on Valentine’s Day.
