Mr. Rawlins is one of those people whose impact on this city really can’t be measured.
For 15 years, he has helped shape The Roots of Music into what it is today. His standard, his presence, his knowledge of band culture, and the way he pushes young musicians to be better has left a mark on generations of kids both inside our program and across New Orleans.
Around Roots, his influence is everywhere. In the sound of the band. In the discipline. In the pride our students carry when they step out for any performance.
He is truly invaluable to this organization, and we are deeply grateful for everything he continues to pour into our young musicians and our programs.

We wanted to highlight our four areas of programming today.
Our Sprouts of Music programming is a once-weekly music lesson for early childhood.
Our Marching Crusaders, for elementary and middle school students, is our flagship marching band program. You might see us on a parade route!
Our Roots Studio Academy is a 10-week course that provides technical knowledge and industry certifications for young adults.
Our new Band Instrument Repair Program supports young people through instrument repair certification and training, meeting a vital community need.

GiveNOLA Day is TOMORROW! 📣

What a night at Roots Fest 2026 🎶
This Wednesday, our students took the stage alongside incredible local talent for a powerful celebration of New Orleans music and culture. From the Marching Crusaders and Studio Academy All-Star Band to Shamarr Allen’s Ratchet Jazz, Kermit Ruffins & The BBQ Swingers, Corey Henry & Treme Funktet, Mikecol and the Jazz Bounce Ensemble. It was a night we won’t forget.
We were also honored to have Black Masking Indian tribes Black Feather, Black Sioux Warriors, and Creole Wild West join us, with some of our students proudly masking alongside them.

The Roots of Music teaches our participants leadership and responsibility while simultaneously preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of our city through music education.
Our programming is offered free of charge to all participants and also includes free wraparound services, including hot meals, daily transportation, academic tutoring, and socio-emotional counseling and mentorship.
