My first single came out today.
My Grandpa toured and played country music all across the country for 30 years with his family and friends.
He started countless musicians and gave them a chance to learn and get on stage. Both of my parents played the fiddle on the Union Mill Opry for years.
Music was such a cornerstone of his life.
When I was 17 he taught me my first chords on guitar.
As I kept learning, every time we crossed paths at home he would ask how my playing is going and ask for me to show him what I’ve been working on.
Every time I would go to an open mic, he would always be there to encourage me to keep playing and keep practicing.
In his room he always had an old beaten up Guild case with a 1970s Gibson Hummingbird guitar that he played on for decades that he let me play on whenever I asked.
He passed away in 2021.
I didn’t know he had left that guitar to me in his will.
He always said you have to keep playing a guitar to keep it alive.
I got home late one night earlier this year, pulled out his guitar and wrote this song.
I met with Scott @amusementparkstudio this March and we got to work on recording.
I asked my mom if she would come up with a fiddle part to add on the song and she came in and brought it all together.
This is his guitar recorded on the song, same strings have been on it since 03.
Grandpa, I don’t know if you can hear me now, but I’m still playing. We miss you. ❤️

🎙️ About Merle Law - Merle Law is an alternative singer-songwriter in Portland, OR. Law has developed a sound driven by counter rhythms, a melodic tide pool and personal poetry that relates to the listener. Merle’s approach, recording to tape on a cheap nylon guitar with a spectral band, is steeped in the textures of the homes they’ve inhabited: from the moss-draped bayou to the foreboding fog of the PNW.
