Studies say that after 30 you’re less likely to find new favorite artists. I beg to differ. This song off the new @jiggybuckaroo album Jiggy Buckaroo reminded me why when I first heard him, I said to myself “who in tarnation is this?” Duffys Bluff - If you were to take Drake’s ongoing series of songs such as 5 AM in Toronto or 4 PM in Calabasas, where he forgoes any attempt at chasing billboard charts or crafting catchy club bangers dressed them up in country western attire and instead of dripping in diamonds and gold, draping them in silver and turquoise you would have Duffy‘s Bluff…and I am 1000% here for it. This is a rappers rappers song. The bars, the beat, the metaphors, the soul sample, the storytelling they all speak to my late 90s early 2000s hip-hop sensibilities and really speak to the soul any enthusiast of that era in hiphop music where you as the listener feel as though you have the opportunity to catch a glimpse or sneak peek through the window of who they are not only as an artist, but as a person. No line in that song does that more for me than when he says “I’d rather be all alone somewhere in a tree stand than be around y’all wastin’ away another weekend.” Not only does that speak to his Wyoming roots, a state that boasts some of the most iconic hunting grounds in the country, but more importantly it speaks to his grind as an artist because you can have the look, you can have the backstory and that certainly helps as it establishes legitimacy within the music and you can have the talent but as someone with more than 20 years experience writing, producing and recording music I can say with absolute certainty that talent isn’t rare. Consistency, consistency is rare. Especially in Nashville where there is no shortage of distractions and it is so easy to get lost in the proverbial sauce and yet I’ve had the pleasure over the past two years of watching Ryan consistently deliver not only musically but in messaging and branding as well while many other artists are in fact just “wastin’ away another weekend.”
