Sentimental photobooth post for my XOK work fam. You all live in my heart, and on my walls and refrigerator. I’m lucky to have worked with you and I love looking at your faces every day! 🫰

Sending it up to the universe! A hope for a return to this place and this job that I love so much! It’s a bittersweet end to this season of life. One last wander that led me back to where I was supposed to go today. The tower of Seoul, my soul, that started it all for XOK.

Visit to the DMZ in South Korea. Surreal. Once you pass through the gates, into the Civilian Control Zone, no photos are allowed past a certain point. As someone that loves to remember experiences through images, that was frustrating, but a good reminder to take everything in and stock away visual memories of the trip. I can’t explain why I’ve been fascinated by the separation of Korea into two distinct nations for a very long time. I think it probably was my growing up in the southern U.S. and having our 175 year old civil war present in my mind during elementary school field trips, and growing up in a place that was still obviously shaped by that conflict. Visiting the DMZ in Korea, near a military demarcation line that was drawn within my parents’ lifetime, only 70 years ago — which feels like so little time now that I’ve reached middle life — felt significant to me in a new way that I couldn’t have expected. Having the opportunity to actually visit this area, after spending a short season in Korea last year, and a little more time this year, was special beyond anything I had thought possible. Witnessing history happen in front of me, but from the strange perspective of a tourist that took a bus and looked at North Korea through a giant picture window is something that I’ve been trying to describe to myself since I went there. I still don’t have the words for it. I hope that if I keep talking or writing about it, maybe I will soon, or someday.
