For those who know me, you know how significant art has always been in my life. Since I was a little kid, I’ve had a deep connection to creating. Somewhere around 2018–2019, I lost that part of myself or maybe I just buried it for a while. I’m still not completely sure. I carried sketchbooks with me everywhere, even on my first and second deployments, but I rarely created anything that felt emotionally connected to me or gave me a space to pour my thoughts into. Recently, though, I’ve been trying to find that spark again and truly allow myself to create without overthinking it. I haven’t shared much of my work because opening your art up to the world also opens it up to opinions, and people are always ready to tell artists what they should or shouldn’t make. A lot of people don’t understand the phrase, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit.” But Ocean told me I should stop hiding it and share it with the world. So here I am. These are some of my favorite pieces I’ve been working on lately. None of them are finished yet, I’m currently challenging myself to fill an entire 125-page sketchbook with different concepts and sketches first, then go back and add detail later.
